Years and years ago, when my focus was on guitar, I had my TS9DX modded by Robert Keeley. He did the "Baked" mod which added more saturation and distortion ("3X") than the typical mod done to that pedal. I always loved it for my lead tone on guitar but when I switched back to bass I shelved it, thinking it wasn't usable. Though there are few bass reviews of this particular mod, the discussion about using the stock version of this pedal (by that I mean the standard, unmodded, non-DX version) on bass is pretty negative.
Recently though I've wanted something with a little less fur than my fuzz or the dirt channel on my preamp, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It paid off - the "Turbo" mode has surprised me with its richness and low end preservation. With the tone knob rolled all the way down it adds a slightly more-than-subtle amount of grit, giving a little midrange boost and pushing the tube in my Le Bass. In the A channel there's just a little bit of sparkle that sounds especially good with a pick; the B channel gets really gritty. The other three modes (TS9, +, and Hot) have been kind of useless, but I'm looking forward to trying out the Turbo mode tomorrow with my band.
