I think it’s the option of an Authenticator app that many of us already have for other things.

Nope, you use an actual Authenticator app on your phone, it generates random key numbers, a new one every few minutes. You just have to match it. It's a pain but lasts a few days at least... I use Google Authenticator, works fine. But still, what a pain...
