Two tone dye on thin veneer

i want to place a dark dye on a thin veneer to bring out the quilting. I want to then sand it down and add another dye color over top. The veneer is about a 1/16 inch thickness. Has anyone successfully done this?

You probably want to have your veneers already glued down, and practice a bunch if you haven’t used dyes yet.
