Hi--My daughter is being scouted to play soccer at the University of Memphis. She will probably study math/sciences/engineering. Does anyone here have experience there, especially POSITIVE experiences? Recommendations for great blues and BBQ joints accepted as well!

There are a lot of good BBQ restaurants in Memphis.

Plus there are dozens of Live music venues in the Memphis area which includes Northwest Mississippi, East Arkansas and Southwest Tennessee.

In Google Maps, type "Memphis restaurants". Then click on More Options and select Barbecue under Cuisine. That should give you an idea of the number of BBQ restaurants.

Over the past 30 years, the University of Memphis has certainly grown beyond its reputation of "Tiger High" (i.e., merely a high school-like institution for Memphians looking to continue their education). The university currently has well-known programs of study in business, engineering, music, communications, fine arts and audiology among others. While best known for it's men's basketball and up-and-coming football teams, the school boasts a wide variety of powerful sports programs that draw constant attention.

Memphis feels and operates like a big small town instead of a small city. It's "old South" to the bone... and while only three hours down the road from Nashville, the difference in these two areas is drastic. If you feel like you've been to The South by means of Atlanta, Dallas or Raleigh, I got news for you -- you simply haven't experienced The South until you've been to those cities within a few hours of the Mississippi Delta. It's simply a different flavor of South there... the people, the food, the weather, the traditions, the beliefs, the pace, the feel... cities like Memphis, Little Rock and Jackson, Mississippi ain't your Yankee-infused "South Light." :smug:

While Memphis has a charming history of blues and rock & roll music, it's a dodgy city wrought with its share of crime. For anyone I know who's visiting, I simply tell them to watch their backs and always be aware of your surroundings. If you don't believe this, then you don't know Memphis. Sad but true.

Memphis certainly has its share of fantastic barbecue restaurants as the area's people certainly know what they're doing in this department and have been doing it for centuries. Sure, there are a handful of establishments that get more publicity than others and those well-known spots serve delicious food... but spare yourself the long lines and the high prices and get out and explore or ask the locals where they like to eat barbecue. "Average" barbecue in Memphis tops "great" barbecue in most cities.

It's a decent school that has improved over the years. The city has been on the verge of becoming up and coming for several years now, but it seems incapable of bringing in business to really help bolster the city.

I have a number of friends who graduated from the school and have great careers. Like most colleges, you get what you put into it. There are good medical programs there, and the sports teams are fun to follow.

The city does have a lot of crime. Truthfully, I'd say if you can learn to make it around there safely then you can pretty much make it anywhere. In regards of entertainment, Memphis doesn't offer much. There's the zoo, the FedEx Forum, Shelby Farms, a few local breweries, and not much else.

Some folks I know love it there. I spent my childhood there and couldn't wait to get out. I went to school in Knoxville and haven't lived in Tennessee since graduating from college. I might one day retire to eastern Tennessee, but I wouldn't willingly move back to Memphis on the western side of the state.

Hi- Just getting back to this... thanks for all the info. "Memphians", is that for real?! Haha! It's good to hear the school is improving, and is leaving the "Tiger High" image behind a bit. I agree with the above that most schools are what you make of it academically, and if you shine in a BA program at most places it will open doors. But online there were SO MANY awful reviews, I had to ask.

She has one other scholarship offer at U. of Jacksonville, which is not even close to U of M for soccer, and probably academically as well. These two are the best offers we have on the table. If anyone has a recommendation for other good soccer schools besides the top 10 on the eastern seaboard I'd love to hear them!

I'll be sure to ask locals about BBQ and keep a look out over my shoulder. Need to school my daughter on that as well. I'll report back when we get a firm offer.

West Memphis is number 10 on nations most dangerous cities. I don't know where the school is located.

It's in East Memphis. Midtown isn't too bad and is on the west side of it. I'm from Germantown and lived on its border with Collierville, which is east of East Memphis. Gtown and Cville are arguably two of the nicest areas you'll find in or around Memphis proper, and they are probably some of the better parts of all of Tennessee.

Regarding soccer, Mike Rose was one of the nicest soccer complexes in the whole US when I was in high school, but I'm not sure if that's where Memphis plays or not.

Just to follow-up on this...my daughter is now a MEMPHIS TIGER! She will be playing soccer there starting in 2020. We visited and the coaching staff wooed her, and they have a Div. 1 team that is ranked 51 in the nation. So I'll be eatin' a lot of BBQ and going to the blues clubs, and the Zoo is World Class! Maybe I can connect with some fellow TBers when I go back next time. Thx for the help.
