Double Bass Upton Bass Bag - Reviews?

I've got one of the green ones. I can be hard on bags, and this one has held up better than any other I've owned, fwiw. Decent padding, good choices on handles, full-clamshell opening. The only thing that's gone wrong is the zipper pull, the pot-metal handle broke off.

I have the non Upton branded Bobelock deluxe and the zippers no longer function. Disappointed to say the least because I liked everything else about the bag. I'm going to see about getting new zippers, but have the feeling it will be cost prohibitive. Next !!

Are you saying the Upton and the Bobelock are the same bag? I had a Bobelock and the side handles are too low for me.

Thanks.

I had the upton deluxe case when I had one of their basses, its a fine, well made case but I prefer the mooradian cases, They seem a little more sturdy and I like where the handles are.

Although if I needed a new case right now I would most likely get a messina, a few of my friends have them and they seem like some of the best cases out there. But really I think you can't go wrong with any of them, they are are all high quality and should last a long time.

@Mgaisbacher, I can and have gone wrong - that's why I'm asking questions. The Bobelock is no good for me, for sure. Messina looks good but again, my concern is handle placement - makes me nuts (ok, more nuts) to have to reach to what feels like almost the ground to grab a side handle.

I think the best thing to do then would be to call the upton guys and see what their return policy is and maybe just buy one and try carrying you bass around a bit to see if you like it. Maybe try the same thing with a few other cases. I think almost any case mentioned in this post are made well but its up to you personally if you like the handle placement and you won't know that until your bass is in it and you are carrying it around.

I'm sure if you get a custom cover from Messina you can specify exactly where you want the handles. Highly recommend emailing them and asking.

Well, the used Mooradian is coming my way, so that will be my next case.

Good to have learned about Messina - I didn't see any pricing on their web site, though. Any idea what a standard 3/4 bag would go for these days?

Thanks.

I had both Upton and Bobelock bags. The main difference seemed to be the embroidered "UB" on the Upton's accessory pouch. Side handles weren't bad, but not quite right for me. My ancient Joe's House of Sandals bag is the first I've had that just gets them right.

In August/September 2016, it was $395 + shipping. Custom adds $75, which is worthwhile. I picked two colors, an extra pocket, and embroidery. The cover was made from a tracing and took less than two weeks. It was for a small 3/4 bass and is a perfect fit.

My bass came with a well worn Cushy (by Mooradian) bag that was way too big and may have contributed to the severe fraying inside. After I received the Messina, I took the Cushy to a seamstress and she hemmed all around inside and patched a hole in a pocket for $50. I use it with my old bass and it's OK.

I'm saying that both bags look the same and have Bobelock labels in them. There may be differences that I'm not aware of. I think the folks at Upton would know.
We have another supplier now as there were changes we wanted that we couldn't get before. The new bag (In stock for about a year now) is great...I had them put the handles where I could reach them as the old ones might have been OK if you were a gorilla. I've not had a call yet on a failed zipper with the new bags...
