So I was browsing around the internet and Upton site yesterday and thinking of just how much I missed owning an upright (I sold my blond Thompson RM-100 last year and an Engelhardt Swingmaster prior to that). I've been thinking if I purchased another I'd be wanting an Upton Standard but was a little disappointed in that they no longer offered a blond finish and also the price for the standard was a little out of my reach at the moment so I resigned myself to a long waiting game. Not to mention that the chances of stumbling across a used one in my area (no where near Connecticut) that was more affordable were pretty slim.
Cut to me getting off work, hoping to avoid traffic and stepping into my local pawn shop nearby my office. They generally carry a lot of instruments for a pawnbroker (even have a soundproof demo room to try things out) but after perusing for a bit nothing really grabbed my attention. Then I walked toward the back of the store where they keep their acoustic guitars along with brass instruments and there it was. A blond 3/4 size upright.
"Huh" I said to myself thinking it'd probably be some sort of chinese knock off. So I walked up to take a peek in the F hole using the light on my phone. It read Upton Superswing made in Conneticut right in the good ol' USA.
I almost dropped my phone.
After giving it a good going over and seeing it was in amazing shape I immediately called the guy over to tell him I'd take it. He even threw in the hardcase for free and it came with the bow, quiver, installed with bumpers and a Rev Solo II pickup. All the upgrades and items I would have wanted. SO INCREDIBLY STOKED!!
So my question is did I do pretty well on the price ($2250 for everything) and does anyone know what year Upton stopped making this model?
Not sure how Upton does their serial numbers but this once had these two numbers hand written on the label inside - 2009 & 221
Is the first number the year?
Here's a quick pic from the store-
