As some of you know, I've been considering getting back into playing after a 14+ year time away. I've been looking at used basses and new Ibanez models at GC. I stopped by Danny D's Guitar Emporium during lunch today. All they carry is Fender, so I figured I'd check a few out. First, I played a 5 string active Squire Jazz Bass through a Fender 210 combo amp. It actually sounded amazing! Maybe the Squires aren't the pieces of junk that they used to be. Next, I played a MIM active Jazz bass. It was lighter and sounded REALLY good! I guess I might be in the market for a Fender when it comes time. There was a little bit of sticker shock with the MIM version. I thought they ran in the $500+/- range. This one was $1100 for the 4 string.
I see what you guys were saying in my original post though.... Basses and electronics have come a long way since I stopped playing! The little Fender combo Alps sounded fantastic and were LIGHT! I played through a 210 and a 112. Both sounded really good with the 210 talking the lead between the 2 with better punch. My fingers didn't want to work right, and I have forgotten just about everything I've ever learned over the last 14 years. I sounded like a cat playing with a doorstop, but it felt awesome just holding a bass again!

I agree Jim, but I can't argue with the new technology. The last combo amp that I had was a Peavey TNT150. That thing weighed a TON!
There are still a few Ibanez basses locally that are a good deal. There's also buying used from GC. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on another BTB405QM.

Totally agree about the amps; just picked up a Rumble 100 and you would do well with the 200 / 500 for gigs.
I still gig with a 2x12 neo cab and either an Ashdown or GK MB800; not so much for volume but rather a thick tone and tons of headroom.
The passive basses from back in the day are still killer IMO.

I've bought a megapoopieeton of gear from Danny D's over the years. Not the cheapest place in town but they know what the hell they are doing there. :D
I agree. That active Mexican jazz bass that I was looking at there is $100 cheaper at Guitar Center! Danny is a great guy though that is always willing to give advice or help. I like to try to support small local businesses whenever possible.
