I just got one today and I think it sounds killer! But one thing about it thats driving me crazy is the fan is pretty loud I'd say with that amp volume half way up I can still hear the fan! Is that just how they are? Or did I get a lemon? I will be pretty bummed if thats the case!

Contact Tech21. Even if the fan is that loud standard, they may help you come up with a solution (installing a different, quieter fan most likely) which won't void a warranty, that is if you bought it new. I would suspect they want you to enjoy your amp to its fullest. And you may help them if the fan that comes standard needs updating in future models.

The fan on mine is pretty quiet but I guess it's relative. It's only kicked up audibly once or twice but the amp volume wasn't anywhere near half and it quickly slowed down again. At low volumes and with one of my two cabinets connected, Hydrive 112's, the fan isn't audible at all really. With both connected and running at 4ohms the fan Can be heard but I wouldn't say it's loud.

Mine starts out really quit and keeps ramping up in speed and then stays there!. I live in an apartment so I am just playing at bedroom levels. The fan is pretty loud. I must have gotten a bad one! Its an awesome amp though my p bass with flats sounds killer thru it! I'll have to return it and get another one!

Probably your best bet. Like I said, mine is pretty quiet, and at bedroom levels the fan is barely noticeable. Is ventilation an issue? Is the amp too close to a wall maybe?

What cabinet are you driving with the amp? If it's a multi-driver cab, is it possible it's been miswired to present a 2-ohm load to the amp? Even at low volumes that would ramp up the fan right away. Good luck, Bob

Is the noise a smooth "whirrrrr" that seems loud, or is there a chatter? Sometimes if one (or two) of the screws holding the fan chassis to the body of the amp is slightly over-tightened, the chassis will torque, resulting in a little excess chattering noise. That's one of the first things I'll check if I think a fan is louder than it's supposed to be.

Check with a bit of caution though; you don't want to loosen a screw to the point that you may lose a washer inside the amp (I can't remember what the VT Bass 500 uses to hold the fan in place).

I have one. Fan starts a few minutes after powering up with one or two cabs. I find the fan a little loud as well..

I definitely think it was just a bad unit. I had one same day shipped from Amazon today and this one works fine! This is such a great sounding amp!
I was really surprised how fat the tone on this is! The low end and mids are voiced perfectly in my opinion. I also think it has plenty enough power for band practice and most gigs I think my neighbors think so as well! I had the VTRM preamp which I though sounded great but this amp sounds a little thicker than the preamp did. Well worth 500$
