Weird 'air popping' sound when I play fingerstyle?

When I strike the strings with my fingers I sometimes get this poppy sound rather than an actual note tone coming through the bass amp, could anyone explain why this may be and how I should set up my amp to prevent it? The best way I can describe it is an airy pop, like the sound you make when you put your thumb on the end of a connected lead.

My initial thought is that I've got the gain too high and I'm striking my bass strings too hard. I like to hit the strings really hard when I play but I can't even play above my JB bridge pick up without the note becoming inaudible from the 'pop'. Though it could also be how I set up the equalizer.

I'm a little new to live amp adjustment so I'd appreciate any advice or input on this if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I'll be happy to provide more info if you still don't haha.

Is your action set too low? I had something like that when I set mine really low. The problem was that when I hit (strummed) a string with my finger and it came to rest on the string above it, that string would make a “pop” noise when it bottomed out on the fret board. The solution was (obviously) to raise the strings. That made them higher than I would have liked, but it was preferable to that noise.
