I've been thinking about adding another bass to my arsenal but haven't decided what I should get next.

Background is I have G.A.S. Nothing more, nothing less. ;)

All my basses are 4 string MIJ medium scales (32"). I like the build quality, and the scale length was the most comfortable for me when I switched from guitar a few years ago. That being said, I did play a full scale recently and it didn't feel bad so I'm open to full scale if the neck is right. My budget is around $1,500 preferably less (new or used). I've also looked at 5 strings but sure about those either. We haven't played a song yet where I needed one so...

Items to consider:
  • My band plays rock and alternative - LZ, Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Alice and Chains, STP, Jett, Toadies, Franz Ferdinand, etc.
  • My main bass is P loaded with a passive Geezer Butler.
  • My back up is a Jazz loaded with passive Pure Vintage 74s.
  • I don't play my 3rd bass. It's a MIJ Yamaha Motion MB-iii. It plays great but has always sounds muddy to me. I've given up on it and listed for sale locally (not on TB).
I know both of these basses pretty much cover everything we play but where's the fun in not buying another bass. Alright so with all of that what would be your next purchase?

I voted Musicman as it’s a fairly obvious “other flavor” that your current basses don’t really cover but can work with the material you’re doing.

Within that price range you could grab a used, 1990s G&L L-2000 which could be another great option.

Either of these choices would still feel “Fendery”, because they are, so they would feel pretty familiar right out of the gate.

I'd say for Alice In Chains - Spector P/J 4 stringer with a hipshot D tuner, as some are saying... a Rick, those things slay. Lastly something hollow or semi hollow body, Hofner/Hofner Copy, or Epiphone Jack Casady. MusicMan is cool but... Not everyone's cup of tea.

1) Don't duplicate the Geezer sound on the next bass.
2) Change the pickups on your Yamaha if it plays well for you.
3) Do something different for the next bass - research well before even thinking about what you want. It''l come to you...
