What Happened to the Edit Button?

There’s a new time limit, I think it’s 30 minutes. I just recently renewed my supporting membership, and noticed my posts are all “editable” again. So the time limit must be for non-supporting members.

Follow up question: why?

If I edit or delete my posts, I do it almost immediately. I would wager that is the case with most people. Aside from classified ads, I much prefer the idea of people not being able to edit or delete posts some time after posting. It can create confusion for people reading the thread at a later date.

The ability to edit within a 30 minute time frame makes sense. I heard once, I’m sure it was a joke, that one guy would go back and change his well liked post to something semi-horrible. So, I get it. But....the option to delete altogether should still exist.

Yeah I get it. I’ve heard about other forums where there is no option to edit or delete, so you have to be extra careful with what you say. Personally I only really edit out typos, but still it’s a good lesson in proofreading. I’ve also been on threads where they don’t really make sense because something was deleted.

I donut eddit mi postes.

The edit window was changed to 60 minutes recently to prevent an increasing number of instances of people doing several things:

1) "Revisionist history" - posting something potentially inflammatory, getting other people responding to it, then changing the original post to make it look more innocent. This became a sort of obvious form of trolling, especially when others had already quoted the post in question.

2) Systematically deleting their regular posts a few days after posting, leaving holes in the conversation. Not sure why people were doing this.

We felt that 60 minutes was enough time to get a post right and fix typos, but short enough to hopefully avoid the two types of behavior listed above.

Does this affect all users, or just non-supporting members?

hmm, I noticed this today as well and I don't think I got any minutes to edit. I just posted in the New Quilter Amp thread and right after posting I wanted to do a small edit, but there is/was no edit option and it could not have been more than 1 minute after I posted.

Will this also effect the classifieds?

On the upside it'd be nice to see what things sold for instead of pulling up the page to see SOLD!

On the flipside, how will sellers do price drops?

Original posts in classifieds are still infinitely editable (assuming that the OP is still a supporting member)

They are not allowed to remove content or pricing after an item has sold.

This part is new then?

Just to be clear on that... When doing a price drop, sellers (supporting members) can edit (A)the title, (B)the initial listed price, and (C)the body of the post?
Or just one or two of the above mentioned three???

Thank you for breaking it down @Bob Clayton

Sellers can edit anything they need to. I guess I wasn’t clear. After an item sells they can’t just remove all content from the ad (price, title, body, pictures, etc) and simply replace it with “SOLD!”

And yes, people have done that
