TB used to have a “sticky” thread as a central resource for CITES related information.

I know that in August 2019, there was exemption allowed for “most” rosewoods on musical instruments. But, I was searching for information related to traveling with ebony containing instruments across international borders, and have come up pretty much empty handed.

I think there are still remaining definition and implementation issues that aren’t easy to find. Was it a good idea to lose that main thread? It doesn’t readily turn up in any search I’ve done. Seems we still could make good use of a central thread. Am I missing something?

As of November 2019, musical instruments containing most of the rosewoods except Brazilian rosewood are exempted from the CITES treaty prohibition against international movement. There aren’t supposed to be any CITES prohibition pertaining to ebony in musical instruments.

Check the main thread posted above for more. Here is a very helpful website. League of American Orchestras

That thread was full of misinformation. Why would you trust anonymous bass players on the internet rather than the official CITES website? You will find all the info you need there.

(If I remember correctly there are restrictions on ebony from certain regions/countries but generally no restrictions on any specific species of ebony but don't trust me on this, I'm just an anonymous bass player on the internet).

Search the CITES website or contact your national environmental agency.
