Double Bass What Happens in a Masterclass?

The host trio will probably play a couple tunes and discuss their approach to presenting the tune (style, interactions, form, feel etc). Hopefully they will engage the audience in asking for observations and certainly will want them to ask questions. They'll invite, or have preregistered some students to perform and will give them constructive feedback, perhaps individually or as a student combo. That'd be how I'd structure a master jazz class. The description is not very specific so they may choose to go in one direction more than another. You should go check it out!

I'm at the spot. I think it's gonna be groovy.

That's pretty much how it happened. They played a couple songs, asked for questions, sometimes played more as examples for their answers, then had students play with them and rotate in and out on an extended blues.

It was great.

The bass player and drummer answered a bunch of specific questions for me afterward, and the piano player - the host/leader - was also welcoming and friendly.

Really an excellent experience.

Yeah, go! You'll get something out of it and they are rarely dangerous.

Not even dangerous to my ego either. I was like, yeah, I'm at a level where I can hear what they played (as in identifying basic structures), know most of the why behind what they played, and see how they did it right there, up close.

I love Master Classes. The best one I had was at Golden Gate Bass Camp a while back where I got to play Tricotism for John Carlton and and Kristin Korb among many other other greater teachers and got some good feedback. Somewhere in that camp I got to play a little bit with Bruce Forman too. Go to as many of those as you can and play them every opportunity you get.
