What is Strymons "Ice" effect?

I recently tried out Strymon's Timeline on my bass and fell in love with the Ice effect, but what exactly is it?

The pedal is far too price-y and too big for my pedalboard and I don't need that many features, so I'm looking into a smaller delay pedal with regular delay and whatever Ice is

Is it an entirely new effect created by Strymon or is it avaliable in other (smaller) pedals?

It's a pitch-shifted reverse delay. Crystals on the Eventide H9/Pitchfactor is similar (but also not small and rather pricey), as is Helix on the Source Audio Nemesis (not super small or super cheap, but smaller and cheaper than Strymon).

The Zoom MS series has an Ice emulation (and maybe some of their other multis do too?), that's going to be your cheapest/smallest option. YMMV on how well it emulates the effect.

Lots of pedals have a pitch shifted reverse delay.

Another option is a used Boss PS-3 in mode 7

I wasn't familiar with that one. But yeah, the fundamental effect/idea isn't that rare or unique. A specific voicing/implementation might be.

It's a sound that I really dig but yeah, you're right that the voicings always seem to be slightly different across different pedals.

My first experience with it was the Empress Superdelay about 9 or 10 years ago using reverse mode C. But that's not an affordable option. The Boss PS-3 was affordable when I bought mine ($90 for a delay, whammy, chorus, weird noise machine was awesome) but the prices have gone up on the used market.

I know @Proton Lenny uses Crystals/Ice type sounds a lot. He might have a suggestion for the OP.

Edit: my first search result for a PS-3 for sale gave me one on Reverb going for $379 so I thought prices had skyrocketed but I found a few others for $140-$160 which is more reasonable.

Don't use that setting a lot but I love that it can be found on my PS3, I got mine second hand from eBay for around 120 a few years ago. Even at a slightly higher price the PS3 is so crazy in versatility and with expression pedal can be used as a whammy (plus wet and dry blend) I use it more than my actual bass whammy.
