What strings am I looking for?

I'm looking for a string that's preferably a flatwound, but with a controlled punchy bottom that is more 'tight' than 'fat' and has a subdued top-end that is characteristic of that type of string. Does anyone have any suggestions?

DR Nickel Lo-Riders comes to mind. They're not flatwound but are very articulate since they're hexcore. You might go with a slightly lighter gauge set for less boom and more articulation on your low E or B strings also.

You'll get as many suggestions as there are brands of strings. Personally, I like D'adarrio Chromes because I can get a smooth flatwoundish tone, or a bright punchy, almost round wound tone, all from the same strings.
Since you're in the UK, I'm not sure about availability or prices, but Chromes are about $40 here.
The thing to remember with any flats is to give them time to settle in tone-wise before you decide. Depending on how much you play, it could take several weeks or more to break them in.

Fender 9050L. More "punch" than "thump". Not too old-school (like La Bella or GHS), but still with all the flatwound goodness once broken in.

good luck getting the perfect string for your desired results! i'd think that the right rig would get you there...regardless of string choice!
