so I'm looking at buying a new bass amp (my old one works but i just want to upgrade it) and I'm not sure if i should buy an amp or a GK. I am also open to Mark Bass, peavy and other brands. What is a fair price for a good quality amp like GK or amp?

A lot of people on here like GK too.
I prefer GK.
But you will hear opinions on both sides. It's a matter of personal taste. The Ampeg is known for its hammering rock sound; the GK is known for its 4 band preamp, and clean sound. Markbass is known for it's big sound in a small, lightweight package. Peavey is known for its economy.

Take your favorite bass, play through them all, and pick the best sounding one.

Regardless of make, I suggest buying used from TB. You'll find quality amps at great prices, and you help stimulate the forums community and sales place.

Personally, I can take or leave either GK or Ampeg. Both are great and serve their purpose, but I use Aguilar right now.

  1. If you're unsure what you should buy, go out and try them. Combos/Heads/Cabs. Some people like to mix brands when it comes to heads and cabs. I prefer GK all the way- head and cab. This is a purely opinionated question that only you can answer. We can't make that decision for you.
  2. As far as a "fair" price goes, most retailers will have new products around the same price. For instance Guitar Center, Sam Ash and Sweetwater all have the GK MB212 new for $799.
  3. Depending on condition, you can expect to see most used gear selling for 40%-70% of the new price.

Many years ago when I was a wee lad, I had just bought a rig which consisted of a 200 Marshall Major head with two giant Sunn 2000S cabs of which i was very proud. I showed it to a guitar player who I occasionally played with and he looked at them disdainfully said you should have gotten an SVT. i asked him why and said "An SVT will knock a wall over" which I guess can qualify as a good description for that "hammering rock sound". I eventually bought one and have never looked back, I still use them, for smaller gigs I use the SVT heads with single 15" modern Ampeg 4 ohm B-15T cabs, one or two depending on the room. If you like your bass to sound clear, loud and punchy try one, and you can get just about any tonal variation once you get to know the tone control set up. Ampeg was the first amp as far as I know to have switched tone control centers, in other words you can change the mid control's center frequency which is very useful, the ultra low switch is similar to GK's mid scoop because that's really what it does. If you're afriad of tubes don't be, SVT's are very reliable and road worthy, now remember I'm talking 70's not new ones, I don't have any experience with current Ampeg equipment. I have played through GK stuff and it does have a nice sound but it doesn't have the presence and thickness of an Ampeg. I have also played through Markbass amps and REALLY didn't like them, very boomy but sound small at the same time, I always thought Peavey amps sounded very undistinguished.
