Started to put together a bigger pedal board for a project I'm in which is me and a drummer. New to using delay with bass (and in general) and although I would love to have something like a strymon timeline ( sounds amazing) or a line 6 dl4 I was thinking the mxr carbon copy would be the way to go. What do you guys think?

The EHX Deluxe Memory Man with Tap Tempo is amazing. It has a great sound, the preamp and modulation are gorgeous, tap tempo is really good with subdivisions, etc.
Kinda big and expensive, with not as many features as the Strymon of course. But a really great sounding delay.

Honestly I am a newbie when it comes to the tap tempo thing too. Strymon sounds insane but shelling out that much right now would be ridiculous. What do you guys think of the dl4 or for that matter the m5 or m9. All of those used seem to be good prices or relatively can be found for around the same price. And what do you guys think of the carbon copy?

Carbon copy is pretty good but depending on what you want to do with delay an analog can limit your options. I have a line 6 echo park that I use for guitar it's my favorite at the moment I imagine it would sound good on bass too.

very much enjoying my akai headrush e2 on bass. normal digital delay and tape echo, both of which you can filter for a more analog sounding decay. simple looper too. tap tempo. big footprint might be the only downside

for guitar i use an ibanez es2 echo shifter. nice analog emulation. lots of cool options as well

Love the Endangered Audio Research AD4096 but just bumped it off the board for a Strymon Timeline which is a tiny step down in tone but about 10 steps ahead in versatility. Also really dig the Disaster Transport pedals from Earthquaker!

As many have said, there are plenty of options. What are your goals with the delay? I've found that I prefer digital delay on bass, but analog on guitar. I like the crisp delays of digital for more ambient bass stuff, but shorter analog delays for guitar. I will say this, as well, though - when I tried analog delays on my bass, I preferred them brighter, and wasn't a huge fan of the Carbon Copy. I spent a good amount of time A/Bing my friend's Carbon Copy to my Echo Puss (both are analog), and the Echo Puss was a clear winner for me. It has a nice tone knob as well, so it could go both brighter and darker than the Carbon Copy. When it was all said and done, however, I've found that for my relatively basic delay needs on bass, an old DOD Digital Delay does it for me no problem. No reason to spend more money than you need, so I'd say the first step is to figure out what your tone goals are and go from there.

On a related topic, if you're wanting a short, dark, lo-fi(ish) delay, you might try some reverb pedals. Just figured out I really like reverb!

another vote for the Strymon El Cap here! 2nd place is taken by my Analogman AR20DL and 3rd place goes to Mr. Black Dark moon. I much prefer simple-to-use delays. I would be lost for days knob-twiddling something like the Timeline.

I am gassing for a Strymon Dig tho :)
