Hey folks,

So I have three huge finish cracks on my precision's body, two near the neck, and another going around the entire body, I showed it to two techs who both said they were just finish cracks. Personally, I could care less about cosmetic stuff like that but I'm pondering the idea of buying a new body in case it turns into something more than cosmetic in the future.

I'd like to keep it under $230 and buy another natural finish (Clear or whatever you wanna call it) one that's either swamp ash or alder.

After doing some searching online I found a good handful of places that sell them, just wondering where people have found the best quality one's for not too much $$$ that they didn't have to finish themselves

Try melting the cracks together with lacquer (if your tossing the body anyway). Even if you get brush on from the depot it may melt the finish together a little more. Its not always perfect (aerosol works better) but ive had it work

Fender's online store sells finished necks and bodies, with either MIM or MIA pieces (the selection varies from week to week). I've often thought of building one with a body and a neck, and it really (and legally) would have Fender decals on the neck ! Here's a couple (I'm guessing MIM), painted, no less.

Is that enough to protect the wood? I read in an old post that P body's are too light for that and that that is better done on heavier basses
I’m not really understanding the question. If you want a clear finish, what else would you do? Of course, I understand there are other options like tung oil, but I don’t see what body weight has to do with anything.

My brother has an old strat finished in transparent red. It’s got what looks like a crack in the body but it’s just in the paint. He’s owned it for more than 30 years and the crack is still there and has even grown a tiny bit, but it still sounds and plays as good as it ever did.
You might want to just wait until it actually does become more than cosmetic before you replace the body.

:) Do you live on the banks of the Amazon river? Unless yer goin SWIMMING with it, a couple of finish cracks ( or even 90% of the body finish COMPLETELY GONE!! ) is highly unlikely to cause any structural issue in your lifetime...

You said in the OP that you could care less about cosmetic issues. I don’t see how finish cracks could ever develop into anything else.
