Why are bass/treble usually on concentric pot?

That's what is convenient for most players. And it makes the most sense. Why stack a peaking band with a shelving band?
Maybe because mid controls tend to be stacked Plus/minus with Sweep (frequency)...
That would make sense...if you have a variable mid preamp. All of my active basses have a static midrange frequency.
Perhaps I should have used the word intuitive instead of convenient.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some preamps will use a different value pot for the midrange than the bass and treble. Finding a concentric pot with different values is not always easy.
OK, it's gotta be a standard: BASS is the big bottom "ring" and tinny little treble is the "center" right? 
I think it actually does make sense. Though there are a near infinite number of EQ choices one could make, the most conventional are either a stand-alone mid hump or a smiley face.
It it good to have some kind of standards so that someone can just grab a bass and quickly figure out all the knobs. I hate esoteric electronics that require you read the manual to figure everything out.
All of what they said plus mid range controls were a little late to the game. A ton of preamps had bass and treble when active really took off in the 80s. Most did not have mids. So some of it is a little "it's always been this way".
