Why blur out a Bass/Guitar's serial number in pictures?

I've been browsing the classifieds and have noticed many people blurring out the serial numbers on their instruments/equipment. Why is that? Genuinely curious. It's not like it's a license plate or driver's license number or anything. Is there something I am missing?

Hmm. I don't doubt that it hasn't been tried before, but that sounds pretty crazy. I would love to see examples of that happening and see what the outcome was :roflmao: Thanks for the response!

It would be pretty easy for someone to collect a serial number, report it as stolen and if it pops up again just go to the police and they will take it from the owner. I owned a bass for a year not knowing it was stolen in the past. The police showed up with a police report and took the bass. They didnt even care to follow up with whom i bought it from and despite calling them 3 times and going to the police station twice they basically just told me they dont care. So the "owner" got his bass back, the seller got my money and I am out $700. Fun stuff. I can totally understand blurring serial numbers. I dont do it but anytime I buy a used bass on ebay or craigslist I print out screen shots of the ads, the seller info ( especially phone numbers), screen shots of texts with there address etc. While not necessary to blur serial numbers it does have a reasoning. Personally beyond showing the first few digits that state the year I dont know why anyone needs to know the rest, or at least be publically shown it.

Yes, if someone wants to fake an instrument by using an authentic serial number, I'd rather not make it easy for them to find mine. (Of course that is if I even had an instrument worth faking.)

I had a bass stolen last year. I found it at a local Music-Go-Round. Filed a report, had pictures and receipts. The police contacted me and agreed that it was indeed my bass and that I could go to Music-Go-Round and pick it up. I was then told that I would be expected to reimburse the store what they paid for the bass.
I was surprised and a little disappointed but not concerned because I knew that M-G-R doesn't pay squat.

When I picked it up they said I didn't need to reimburse them. Happy ending. OH and they got the thief.
