Why is nobody talking about the 2018 GIBSON RD BASS?

Dear Zeus, I saw it yesterday evening and I was salivating like a starving pavlovian dog in a church.

It has tons of features! (that I don't like)
Those new Gibson open pole pickups (that sound extremely good).
A redesigned pickguard.
And a switchable active system with bass, trebble and parametric mids (with a wonky layout).
Also it comes with a babicz full contact bridge (that I like).

It's maple all the way, with a rosewood fretboard and comes in natural or in ebony.

Like you noticed, it has a lot of things that I despise, but I'm still GASing hard, because it's a motherflippin' RD!

I'm getting mine in Ebony... if I somehow get the $

I just got a natural+rosewood+black headstock G&L and my OCD totally tells me to get the natural RD.
I always liked this bass but as I grow I appreciate the strap button at the 12th fret. Gosh. I want one anyway.

Well, they are pretty :)

It looks nice but it looks like a shoulder killer.

Yeap. When the ad copy states [FairUse] ... it's this dense weight that conjures maximum attack, articulation, and sustain ... [/FairUse] I know to GAS elsewhere. My eyes love the RD, my ears will probably love the RD, but my body has another opinion. And I listen to my body.

I’ll have no opinion until I can get to try one. Hopefully it won’t be as disappointing as the Ripper II “reissue” was.

BTW - why are these things called reissues when they’re not? The heart and soul of the Norlin era Gibson basses was their unique electronics. If you change the pickups and the tonestack in those, you have a different bass despite the cosmetic similarities. Reusing a discontinued model name and body shape isn’t a reissue. It’s more like a “recycle.”

Or so I think. But I’m just a crabby old longtime Gibson bass player. So what do I know? ;)
