Why no replacement 4 ohm Scout speakers on the Mesa site?

I'm going to answer this in more general terms because I don't know the exact answer in this case, but what the industry has seen over the last 5 years or so is an increased failure rate of 4 ohm speakers because many of the newer amps are capable of 600-800 watts into 4 ohms. Without some good common sense and reasonable expectations, this leads to more damaged speakers and unhappy customers. Most manufacturers are migrating from their single driver 4 ohm cabinets to 8 ohm cabinets for better (real world) power matching, as well as allowing for better options in adding another cabinet. We did exactly this with the Subway line, and with a little careful engineering, it's possible to increase the sensitivity enough that the maximum SPL difference difference the 4 and 8 ohm versions is quite small.

There MAY be some 4 ohm drivers still available but I do not know for sure. Customer Service will check for you and answer you back. You might want to give them a call.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, agedhorse.

I spoke with support. They said that the Powerhouse 12" 4 ohm ceramic is now the replacement for the Scout's 4 ohm speaker.

If you buy an off-the-shelf Walkabout Scout, it will weigh 51 lbs with the original neodymium speaker. With the ceramic, it will be even heavier. I'm not crazy about this, even though the sound might have more heft to it.

I don't think you will find any difference in heft between the two. I would recommend the 8 ohm version, much more versatile and very little difference in maximum SPL.

Thread resurrection!!

The speaker in my Mesa Walkabout blew out yesterday at a show. It's a 4ohm 12" speaker.

i'm having the same problem in finding a replacement 4ohm speaker. So will I be ok in dropping an 8ohm in instead? The amp is rated at 4oh and I have no desire to run another cab with the combo. thanks!

4 ohms is just the minimum it can support. You don't want to go below 4 ohms.

See post #6 about the speaker.

Yes, we do have the factory replacement drivers available in 8 ohm in stock. The difference in volume is very small but the improvement in reliability is significant as it pretty much eliminates the possibility of overpowering the driver when using the Walkabout amp.

Call customer service and they will help you sort this out.

Did you order the factory speaker? Assuming your cabinet has a passive radiator, the original driver takes this into account with regard to tuning parameters.
Oh, so no tweak to the tuning needed (either via swapping the port duct or the radiator weight)?
We were wondering about possible tuning differences in the two versions, and in that case how they were implemented, a while ago:
Speaker responsiveness (&ff.)
