wow, over 1000 posts!

since it has, I'll just post my prior wishbasses, and my new one... And let's keep it going, post yours and what it's made of/what you've added to it.

#643 - Spalted Maple, Persimmon Fingerboard; Pear, Walnut and Maple Neck Stringers, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder installed by previous owner. Flamed Maple Veneer Control Cover - requested and sent by Mr. Wishnevsky. I purchased this on ebay from BassDudeSA (OP of the thread). I sold this locally to someone who played standup.

#666
Burl Maple Top, Pear Body (pear has been used in woodwinds), Persimmon Fingerboard, Walnut and Purpleheart Neck Stringers, Dimarzio Model P installed by myself. Flamed Maple Veneer Control Cover. Sold locally to a Japanese man who was very happy with it.

#712
This was a custom I ordered. 5 String, Ambrosia Maple, Purpleheart Fingerboard, Walnut, Maple and Purpleheart stringers, Kent Armstrong Pickup.
No name brand bridge, and Amboyna Knobs added (can you see them?). Sold to a TBer.

And here's a group shot I just found, which was taken before some of the mods - you can see the Lobe still has the EMG Select, and the Custom 5 still has the original bridge:

and the one that I have on order which was just finished by Steve Wishnevsky, Mr. Wishbass himself - granted it isn't exactly what I asked for (he didn't quite get the horn the way I wanted):

#942
30" Scale, Walnut body, Ebony Fingerboard, Kent Armstrong Pickup - and I'll be doing the finishing when I receive it.

Gubna; I know you said this new one is not exactly what you ordered, but it still is really kool. I love the combination of Lobe on the left, and Peanut on the right. The neck wood is kinda' kool too, just the way it is. If it were mine, I would definetly keep it. I currently have a 30" scale on order from Wish so I wonder what it will look like since Wish seems to forget stuff. That can be sort of fun too, if one isn't too fussy about things. Please show us some shots of it after the finish job. Once my walnut Stude arrives in about a week and a half, I'll try to get a shot of the family together, minus the on-order Fantasy of course. Thanks for sharing!

I really like that. Better than the aluminum for sure, and better than most of the veneers I've seen too. Love the paisley shape!

Thanks. In order to avoid driling more holes, I used the old cover plate as a template to establish the position of the 3 mounting holes - so this new cover went into the old holes, just with a different orientation. The idea was also for the brass color to blend a little better with the spalted woods and not scream out at you. I think it does that now that I see it on the bass.

The Mulberry "Arrow" model was my first Wishbass (somewhere in CA now)

My second Wishbass was this Walnut 5-string "Lobe"... one of my favorites (I wish I hadn't sold it.)

Folks; I have a dumb question ... When you are taking a Wishbass apart to refinish it, is it better to unsolder the wire from the pickup (at the volume control) or just snip it in two somewhere in the control cavity? On my Hyper I snipped it in two leaving enough slack on both sides to run the wire back into the control cavity and still have enough from the volume pot to do the re-soldering. It seems like it would be a simple thing to figure out, but it struck me that perhaps I made my life more difficult by doing it the way I did. Thoughts? Thanx!

When Wish "forgot" parts of my custom order, at first I was angry, but that quickly gave way to concern, I hope he is in good health.

I had ordered a purpleheart top with a purpleheart fingerboard. Ended up getting a rosewood fingerboard. I had ordered purpleheart for purely aesthetic reasons, but after a few days I grew to really like the purple and red together. Plus I'm guessing rosewood will be sturdier in the long run.

This will be my first attempt to place nice big pics in the message, my Wishbasses

My first acquisition was a custom order, #474. I specified the Scroll body shape, and the pups, one of each, EMG select and a Kent Armstrong, and let Wish decide the rest. I did tell him I preferred dark woods, he used light woods. I have since replaced the pups with EMG active 40P and 40CS
Scroll474.jpg

While my custom was in transit from Winston Salem, I got a second chance offer on #476, Spaulted holly top, Standard body style. It had an allparts knockoff of a classic Gibson pup, and a rear control cavity cover. String spacing was too wide for the narrow Gibson style pup, which sent me on a foolish course. Filled the old string holes and drilled new ones closer together. After a few months realized I didn't care for the narrow string spacing. Filled the new holes, opened up the original holes, and installed and EMG 35DC pup with EMG three band EQ. Second time playing after the change and I stepped on the cord, snapping the wood around the output jack, hence, the aluminum cover to mount the jack and cover the half dollar sized hole. This bass is at the luthier having the fretboard leveled. When it comes back I'm putting veneer on the aluminum.
Standard476.jpg

After being seduced by a scarab on ebay, which I returned, because I discovered that IMHO, Wenge is not a good wood for fretless fretboards, too much texture in the grain, and the string spacing was way too wide, I decided to order a custom Scarab. #861. This one I ordered without finish or electronics. Purpleheart and pear body, Maple/Purpleheart/M/P/M neck with a rosewood fretboard, even though I ordered a purpleheart fretboard. This one has an EMG 35P with EMG bass/treble stacked. Very bright and pingy tone, compared the scroll which also has an EMG P pup, and a much darker, woodier tone.

Then, literally days after I boldy announced to my wife that the 9 basses I had so wisely acquired seemed to fulfill such a wide variety of tones and looks, that I was most certainly done, I saw old #88 on the ebay, a Peanut. Cherrywood body, "from a dense, old piece of cherrywood that a very strange man dropped off at my house one day" said Wish. Smelled like menthol cigarettes, the brushed on lacquer was all sticky. I'm keeping the Kent Armstrong pup in this one. All my WB's have been refinished by me, Tung oil. And three of the four have had fretboard work to level out the bumps. They all sound different, and feel different. I like em.

I think I'm done.......... James

Does anyone know if you can get a Wishbass with a lined fretboard?

I'm sure you could order one but I wouldn't recommend it. Wish is notorious for variation in the placement of his side dots. I would order a custom with no lines or side dots, and have a local luthier cut and fill the fretboard lines for you. You could get the fretboard leveled at the same time. You will be happy you did.

Not sure if this is the appropriate place... but i noticed in an eBay auction of his, Wish said that after his 1000th bass, he's going to decide if he wants to sell the company or not.

I don't know if it will be his decision or not. I wonder who would want to buy Wishbass. As much as I love them, they have a bad rep in some circles. But the real clincher, as I am led to believe, is that Wish will still be building instruments. He makes all sorts of stringed wonders, see Wishnevsky.com. Unless the sale comes with some clause that prevents Wish from building electric basses. I will watch this unfold with great interest. If I were closer to retiring from my current career, I would have considered it for myself.

On both my WB's I left the pickup in place and covered it with tape and heavy paper. The controls I took off the plate (both mine are rear mounted) and wrapped the controls and wires in cloth and put them back in the cavity. That worked fine. If it hadn't, I would have snipped the wires and then reconnected them.

there's a beat of a hyper: purpleheart top on ebay now at $300. If I didn't like my hyper so much already...
auction number 130235421988

Actually, it's not on ebay any longer, it's en route to ME! Purpleheart top, narrower nut, and the classic Hyper shape, I couldn't resist.

I wonder if this threat to retire is just a ruse to get people like me to buy more Wishbasses before it's too late. Ha ha....
