So i've been working on this with the major scale and i'm seeing some progress. But I just made some major practice in about 10 minutes of time. I was playing along with Ah Leah on youtube and next song that came up was My Sharona. I'm thinking, what the heck i'll give it a shot. So I already knew they had this octave thing going on with the song so I didn't need to check tabs or anything. Long story short, that main G octave riff is really good practice to get used to moving your thumb around and off that pickup. So anyone struggling with this technique give this song a shot. I'm moving my thumb from the pickup to the E string as I go back and forth from the low G to the octave. It's kind of fast so I feel like it's training me to make the move back and forth without thinking about it.
