Hi! I'm looking for a backup for my Yamaha BB414. I stumbled upon this Yamaha BB200 for 250$ (CAD). It comes with a Univox 90 watt, 15 inch speaker amp in need of a cleanup. I don't really care about the amp, but the bass looks like a good deal. It's supposed to be lightly used and, according to the serial number (HX18265), it was made in 1990 in Taiwan.

Would that be a good deal?

The owner won't sell the bass without the amp. I figured i'd try to lower the price to 225$ CAD and maybe try to clean the amp with Contact cleaner and try to resell it...

Thanks!

These were Yamaha's entry level bass guitar at the time.
  • Made in Taiwan
  • Alder body
  • 21 fret neck
  • 34" scale
At a glance it seems like a good deal to me, especially if it's only lightly used.

Given its age, I'd make sure neck was nice and straight, truss rod was in working condition, pots were ok etc.

Will you have a chance to try before you buy?

If all is good, you'll have yourself a nice bass. I own several BBs, and they are all excellent. Good luck.

Those were great basses at the time. Solid as a rock. I’d compare its quality to a MIM fender. I always wish I’d kept mine.
Thanks for the input. It amazes me that the BBs can be compared to MIM Fenders... it's an entry level l'instrument, after all! But I get the hype factor of Fenders.

I guess I can spot a twisted neck, but how about the truss rod? Do I bring an Allen key and simply try to turn the rod in both directions?

And one last thing: I was initially looking for a BB300, wich seems to be a higher grade instrument. I'm not that much into the cherry red color of the 200, but it's so inexpensive! (Prices online are unbelivable!) Shouldn't I wait for a natural finish 300 instead?

I couldn’t get along with that color, myself.

I haven’t really ever loved an instrument I bought because it was inexpensive. I have bought inexpensive instruments that I liked the look, sound or feel of, however.

I can live with the red, even if it's kind of "showy"... I already have a BB414 (it's raspberry red, wich would go along with "vivid red", as it was called) that I like quite a lot and the BB200 seems to have a pretty decent sound, from what I've heard on YT. It has the same radius and a slighty larger neck at the nut.

I've always been attracted to "hidden gems" that others will turn up their noses from! ("It doesn't have the resale value of a Fender!")
