Often referred to as Palming when using the bridge hand and used with the fretting hand to prevent sympathetic vibration (resonation from adjacent strings) not being played. syn. muting. Not to be confused with "damping factor," a specification of power amps that refers to how quickly or slowly an amp can control the movement of speaker cones, resulting in (or a lack of) transience, which causes articulation.
