Why is rhythm important and why does anyone need to read rhythm syllables? Aren't they just extra steps?
For any musicians, but for bass players in particular, rhythm fluency and tempo are critical. Yes, percussion and drums often the glory, but it's really the bass that provides the heart of the music. Our rhythm skills need to be top
-notch.
In the music teaching word, counting rhythm through the use of rhythm syllables has been a trick proven to help increase the speed at which we learn rhythm and the "smoothness" of rhythm performance. It's like learning to speak another language. The rhythm syllables will help you sound like a native "music speaker" rather than someone stumbling through the music.
Don't we all want that?
Check out this infographic for a brief example of the different rhythm options out there. If you want to read more, click the link from above for details including how each system works, help picking which one is right for you, and exercises for practicing rhythm.
