Derived from the original Fender single coil Jazz bass pickups which set the standard for their dimensions. The dimensions no longer reflect the internal construction but has resulted in the overwhelming majority of bass pickups constructed of any single dimension to be jazz pickups. Generally associated with a brighter, clearer tone.
