A term coined from likening their rectangular, smooth (non-exposed pole) appearance to bars of soap. The reference is to the housing only and does not reflect internal construction. Housings vary in dimension and can accommodate any coil configuration. However, it is common for soapbar pickups to contain dual coil ceramic pickups, such as the EMG 35DC.
