The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

I listen to the to the original recording, and try to mentally tune out the bass, or if needed make the EQ favor making the bass hard to hear.
Make sure you can hear the percussionist and draft off of that vibe...
Then I use Transcribe! (music transcription software) to put the recording I have into the right key. Then I just play the song a couple times just hitting roots.
I'll deviate from that if a little 5th, minor 3rd, or octave thing is just plain obvious....
So run through the new song a couple times like that. Then flip focus to paying attention to what the bassist on the recording is doing. If there's something clever going on there that I need to assimilate (that's within my skill set), I'll grab it and add it.
Once I have all that strategy stuff down, just quality check make sure the bass line I'm settling in on is tasteful, respects the other instruments and is supportive of the song.
I like this a lot. Really cool exercise to create your own line, then compare to the OG.

I would probably do that if I had practice time. As a new dad, I don't. :roflmao: Listening to the OG is the quickest way for me to learn and therefore the only pragmatic approach in this season...

I used to do something similar years ago, but only because I was usually just handed charts to songs I'd never heard recordings of. Then my band would work up our own version almost from scratch. It was always really interesting when I would finally hear the original, sometimes months or years later, and could compare my approach to the recorded bassist.

I just subscribed to the multitracks solo practice bundle, it seems pretty sweet. I'm excited to put it through its paces as soon as I get the setlist for sunday!
Please let us know what you think! It seems to have a glitch in the guide tracks? If you leave the song as originally recorded they work fine. However, if you edit the song map, they won't update to the new arrangement. I don't mind that, but the original guide track is still turned on with the new arrangement. And it's completely out of sync!! Seems like it should just turn off at that point? Maybe I'm missing something??

That is some great work!

It was a major learning experience for all of us. That’s just a rough cut of one song… none of us felt particularly good about a lot of that morning but It’s very easy for us to jump straight into critiquing and not so easy to remember to step back and celebrate what God did do/has done in that moment. Just as I said to the crew privately, if that’s the only thing that came to be for all the time/effort/cost… it’s more than worth it to me.

It’s only up from here and there’s gonna be more!

So…

We couldn’t figure out how to get the feed to the new wedge.

Thankfully I had a second DI out on my TT-800 which made life easy.

I think in the process, we somehow ended up without bass in the livestream. This may seem normal, but we only had two instruments. Very few people watch the livestream, so not the end of the world - you could certainly hear me in the mains.

Unlike some folks, I used the G string on all the songs on Sunday - although most of those times were above the 12th fret. Even took a brief impromptu solo during a four bar instrumental - didn’t plan this, it just happened.
Same for me. I can't play if I don't have my G string, so I will begin the search for another 5 string when finances ever allow.

That bass sure doesn't look like a Squire to me. It looks high end.
Other than my first (cheap, bad) acoustic guitar, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a Squier. That’s my American Ultra.

Edit to add: I didn’t mean for that to come off snooty. I have great respect for the current Squier line and have owned a variety of brands over the years. My first acoustic was a $100 beginner pack that was painted plywood and happened to have the Squier name on the headstock.
