As stated in the title, which flatwound strings excel in thump and which in punch?
And are either thump and/or punch prone to boominess?
But perhaps to start with, are thump and punch really two different qualities?
Thank you for your input fellow TBers.
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a set of flats that has more tension than the Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats but less tension than the La Bella 760FL flats?
My preferred rounds are D’Addario EXL170 so looking to get a set of flats of a similar tension to these for my 60s...
Last year I built what could be a birth year (1958) P bass for me using all Fender/CTS parts; 2 tone sunburst body, gold anodized pickguard, thumb rest, etc. Not exactly 1958 parts were a Fender roasted maple neck and Fender Pure Vintage '63 pickup. Came out really well - great feel and sound...
For sale is my 2009 Fender 5 String Precision V. Made in the USA. Right around 9 lbs weight. Overall very good condition, everything works as it should. Has a nordstrand pickup installed, comes with the original one, and a hard case. Has TI flats on it currently. Great bass, just doesn't...

I finally had listened to @michael_t recommendation and put Pressurewounds on my Lakland. Solid sound, great tension and feel and overall, I'm happy with the combo.
A week ago, I went to Bass Bash in Chicago and met Ian from Scott Bass Lessons. To make the story short, I got to play a little...
I have a set of LaBella, Low Tension Flats that I just took off my 78 Jazz. I have another set that I am throwing in… I don’t remember why I took those off. I am also throwing in a new, single G string. I have both sets packaged up and marked. I was using them with a BadAss II bridge.

Of late, it's perceptibly quieter and with less pronounced attack.
Perceptible acoustically (not plugged in i.e. not suspecting electronic issue...)
Thought maybe too low causing pickup magnetic attraction, raised saddle 1 turn, no difference...
Almost 3 years old. Nothing special about A...
Hi Everyone
I've been experimenting lately (last couple of years!) with some Fender Flats on my main Jazz Bass and I'm loving the tone for most things. The problem is, I'm still having trouble with stickiness - normally things are ok, but last night we played an outdoor gig and, when the sun...
So I know a lot of people have problems w/ their flats and uke bass strings feeling sticky. Recently I've been playing a bass uke w/ Aquila Thunderblacks and noticed that the two thinner strings that have the iron in them seem to be much less sticky. Got me thinking.
Has anybody tried...
I realize I may be opening a can of worms here, but I genuinely am curious about something. I suppose I have to state that I’m in no way trying to disparage anyones string or tonal choices here. But I’ve seen so many posts on here that typically go one of two ways, either “I’d do xyz and put...
Hello all,
I recently strung my bass with DR flats, as they were the cheapest I could find. I have no prior experience with flatwounds, but I can say that I really enjoy them. I love the texture of the flats and they certainly warmed up the tone. Also I may be noticing less rattle/clack, which...

I had these on a 5 string MTD Saratoga - 4+1, for about 6 months only in my home. Excellent condition. Sold the bass but kept the TI’s hoping to use again but now I only own 4 string Fenders and the G string is to short for top post. The exact length of the strings are B - 42.75, E - 45.0, A -...

2018 Epiphone Thunderbird Vtg Pro - Alpine White
Great condition other than one chip on volume knob. Strung with Chromes (flats). Previous owner put a Gibson truss rod cover on, but it's an Epiphone. Fretwork is terrific. My favorite bass to play, but I'm moving, need to downsize, and am going...

Hey all, I have a set of Roto flats up for grabs. Great strings, just didn’t quite suit my jazz bass. Cut for 4inline with plenty of leftover. Probably used for 10-15 hours. $25 shipped conus. Will consider trades for cream colored jazz pickups (or just covers), nice clip on tuners, new round...

why do i currently find myself chasing the tone of geddy lee and chris squire and the like?!?!
when i first started playing bass on a crusty old white precision about a year and a half ago, chris squire and geddy lee were my main inspiration. somehow, even on those cruddy 20 year old...
What are the darkest flats you've played? Thick, dark tone, focus on the fundamental without much - or any - overtones, minimal sustain. Yet not dead, well at least not completely dead.
I tried a search but couldn't find an existing thread about great thumpy bass recordings.
I'm thinking of bass that moves the song, thumps, thuds, walks, rumbles, etc. without sizzle, hiss, click, or clank. Not that there's anything wrong with bright bass tones, but I'd love to see a thread for...
Bought my son an ESP LTD D-6, but he much prefers flats vs the shipped rounds. Having zero luck finding flatwounds that are long enough for the string through design. Hoping I’m just bad at searching, and would be thrilled to be shown the light.
Hi there!
Some of you wanted to see my 75 P-Bass in detail.
So, here you go:
It´s a 1975 Precision Bass, equipped with an EMG GZR and strung with old D´Addario Chromes.
The bass has been played through my EBS Classis Session 30 combo and my MarkBass LittleMarcus 1000 (both DI out, into my USB...
A bunch of parts that came off an MIJ fretless jazz bass. Pickguard, pickups with screws, control plate wiring harness, bridge/screws, and some heavy flatwound strings (not sure of brand). See pics for details. $55 shipped for everything. Thanks for looking!

I recently bought a Maruszczyk Frog 5-string, set up with the the standard flats they sell through their custom portal (.45, .65, .85, .105, .125). However I want to switch to TI Jazz Flats. The TI low B is the only string that's a thicker gauge than what's currently on my bass (.136)...
Bought these just to hear what they would sound like, knowing fully well that I would not be keeping them. Just wanted to hear my new bass strung with TI flats. As expected, they are beautiful. These have less than one hour of playing time. They are cut for a 3 + 3 headstock. Shipping is...
