Last year I made arrangements for my favorite luthier in Europe to build me a custom guitar. It was in his queue and he had received the box of parts I had sent him (pickups, kahler vibrato and locknut, machine heads, luminlay rod...)
But he and his whole family have been ravaged by COVID and...
Hi,
I have been looking out for bow recently and I came to realize that I don’t know what makers to look for. I also don’t have a lot of time to get an idea of what makers are good through trying them out. I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations. Please understand that I am looking...
Hello,
I’m just a tad OCD when it comes to my basses and I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether this is a sign of the frets sprouting? Not sure if fret sprout is the correct term here (I’m not referring to the edges of the frets), but what I mean is that some of the frets don’t look...
I'm planning to visit NY soon from the Caribbean and I was wondering where I could go to get my Wyn Bass checked up on. Electronics and set up needs work.
I want to go to someone I can really sit and talk things through, who's trust worthy.
Any recommendations?
Need Help Identifying this bass, recently had a family member pass, and took over his large collection of basses and guitars. This is the only one we can't find anything about this bass.
Hello, I have an idea about some unique work I would like done to a neck. I am looking for suggestions on luthiers who may be able to do this work - please reply with their info. I know there are skilled luthiers here as well, but one of the moderators told me that it is a bit of a faux pas to...
Hi folks,
a friend of mine bought a jazz bass and gave me to set-up it; when I disassembled it, I found, on the neck cavity, the inscription "BRONSON TEXAS'' (you can see in the attached picture). I've tried to find some info from the web (I used google to search) but the most consistent results...
More car repairs have necessitated the sale of my last piece of valuable gear.
This is an incredible Andrew Drake Custom bass; it was even his personal bass for some time.
Since I've had it, I had the frets replaced/leveled/dressed with stainless steel frets as well.
This bass plays and...

Let me start out by saying I have no affiliation with Walter Bass Co, I'm just trying to express how impressed I am with the work being done by a new luthier here in the states.
I'm always on the look out for new luthiers/bass builders that are doing something interesting but don't yet have...
Hey TB members in the GTA Toronto, Ontario area..... I have an old precision bass I want the body refinished...can anyone recommend a luthier or somewhere to get it done? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, was hoping someone could have some insight on this. I'm receiving a fretless neck in the coming months from a Warmoth build. The fingerboard is black ebony. I know ebony is a pretty hard wood and is already more resistant to string wear than other woods, but I plan on using...
Hi all..I need help locating a very good guitar electronics tech to help me diagnose and repair a possible grounding issue with a Serek bass I bought a few months ago (used). It has two pickups but the buzz is virtually identical when selecting a single or both pickups when it should be...

I bought this Jazz Bass body on Reverb from a ‘reputable’ seller. I had to relocate the neck plate screw holes, then the bridge, and now I think the pocket may need routing. It’s definitely a bit uneven.
As a result, I’m not 100% sure the new neck pocket and bridge holes are in the exact...

I've been making my second bass. It has american maple thru neck, mahogany wings and rosewood fretboard. I've modeled it a bit after Les Claypools (short scale, 29 frets, enough room for a whammy bar eventually lol) I have limited room and it will be fairly close to the bridge. I want a pick up...
Hello people, I'm looking for information on a specific matter, a little while ago I bought a double bass online from Romania to here in Chile, it was sent to me in two parts, neck and body, a luthier assembled it for me, it's a good bass carved, beautiful sound, but when playing for just a few...
I am currently trying to improve this plan for my next bass build. It’s based on a CB bass but I want it to be more unique. If one of you guys want to screenshot the drawing and add something to it, I’d be very happy to build it. :)
Sent this to my builder friend, figured you all might be interested. Pretty interesting stuff! Rare hardwoods with no deforestation may be possible soon. Scaled up, this could be huge for humanity, too, but I'm more interested in the build potential haha.
Scientists can now grow wood in a lab...
Hi,
I've got a few tools I want to sell altogether, most were bought from StewMac. Most of these are brand new, I was going to open a repair shop and had some health issues. Anyway:
Japanese Guitar nut files (.010, 0.13, 0.17, 0.26, 0.36, 0.46) (Uo-Chikyu brand)
Bass nut files (0.46, 0.65...

Im looking into getting a custom bass and I have come across a lot of Brazilian luthiers that seem to be priced way lower than local options and they look very nice. Does anyone have any experience with Brazilian luthiers and are they any good? To name a few, Rafael Brandão (rb custom bass)...

Hello. Toying with the idea of reducing my "herd" of electric bass body blanks. Sorry, not too familiar with Talk Bass posting protocol. I am surprised there isn't a Classifieds that is dedicated to building basses. Should I post bass body blanks to parts? Thanks for your note. JP
Looking at a franken-bronco build and researching dimensions. Ive seen threads put the neck heel width at 2.289 in, and i just wanted to confirm that number with other builders.
I wanted to share my recent experience and thank the bass community at large for this forum and the wealth of contributions I’ve found here. I’m a long time lookie-loo having played all manner of instruments in my 39 yrs. While I’m far from a pro I’m proud to call myself a lifelong musician...
There's a local luthier where I live who shares my passion for the strange and unique. While this took a while to complete, it was well worth the wait. I have a Peavey Millennium BXP I bought a few years ago as a body and neck off of eBay. I since sourced a bridge, tuners, pickups, and...
A friend of mine gave me this 70s era jazz bass for me to own and restore to playing order. It's got all sorts of problems, but it has a body and that's all I need, I love that bridge pickup slot position.
I want this to project go ahead, however there is just one problem... the neck is...

I got myself a second hand Squier VM Jaguar Bass and the last owner painted the headstock, glued a fender logo and varnished it.
To be honest I think the logo looks pretty ugly and It's obviously fake. I wanted to know how can I remove it considering it's varnished!
Hello everybody. I bought a really nice used American standard Fender Dimension V.
I have a strange neck and fretboard problem. The first problem is that even though the bridge is down, the G string is still high on the neck and vibrates from 8 onwards. So the luthier decided to rectify the...
Hello
I recently bought an Ibanez TMB100 and I am looking to converting it to a fretless bass. I don't have a fret puller right now and I was wondering if there were any other possible ways to convert it.
Maybe I could grind the frets down? Idk.
Hi all,
First I know this can get political… please if that’s your point move along and do not post. My goal here is absolute positivity and celebrating excellence and different stories that may not be shared as often. Not to make a judgment call on anyone or any industry… feel free to do that...
What woods work together well, and which don't?
I'm a fan of unusual, so my particular interests are there. I'd love to see unusual and sustainable options, particularly if I end up making a bass myself. But, I'm not near as knowledgeable as some of you, so I figured I'd start this thread. For...
Hello all,
just wanted to share with you a bass that I've been checking for a long time.
I was in a hunt for a "p51" (slab board) bass for years, did quite a research, looked for builders, luthiers even looking to mod a cheap Harley Benton or a Squier.
My price range was around 800-1200 usd...
