Would you guys be interested in a simple flats V. rounds shootout?
For those who don't know, a good while ago I went to China, beforehand I got a set of D'addario XL Nickle-steel roundwounds, and forgot about them. When I got back, I got a set of Chromes, both to put on my 4-string squier...
If money was no object would you put new roundwound strings on for every gig you play? I used to think this way because I was totally into Geddy/Chris Squire/Mike Rutherford, etc. but now I wouldn't do that. I like the way strings sound after they get broken in.
I bought a few sets when I saw they were on clearance. I haven't looked to see if they were available online, but at my local store they had quite a few sets left. They are lower tension than some others, but still a good deal.
Well, it is only the third bass string, in over 50 years of playing, that has broken on me. Fortunately, it was at a rehearsal. I have to say though, this was after they have been on the bass, my trusty '65 Jazz, for most of the last 7 years! Every now and again I would take them off and put on...
So I've been getting into rounds again and am thinking of maybe stringing another bass up with a set. It seems that anytime I hear a sound I like it ends up being somebody using rounds and they are usually Rotosound. One of my favorite bassist Darryl Jenifer uses them and recently I've been...
So I am getting my first pbass in the mail next week (early 90s MIM), and I need to get some strings for it. I would want to get some roundwounds since I like the idea of a piano-like sound, but I don't like the way they feel and I don't want to wear the frets/fretboard as much as they seem to...
The current set of D'Addario XL I have on is now on its last legs and I need suggestions on a similar replacement. The XL sounded good (not great) when I put them on, but the lifetime was not impressive, and they are not dying gracefully.
I look for a string with similar tension (not less)...

I typically play my Squier VM Jazz V, which I currently have strung with Regular Slinkies. These things are rough on my fingers (plucking hand)! Admittedly, I don't play a ton. I serve on the worship team at church once a month, and beyond the week that I'm on, family obligations currently...
as the title asks, is there a noticeable difference in string tension between rounds and flats. My Jazz Bass has its original round wounds and I am contemplating my next set. Great resources in this section of the forun, by the way.
Thanks.
This is just curiosity on my end. Do you play flats exclusively, or maybe do you play rounds more than flats for whatever reason (a requirement for a band for example), but you are a flatwounder at heart?
