This is 'normal'. You are simply buying a shipping label from someone that has a deep discount tier. Same exact thing if you sell a bass on Reverb or Ebay and buy their shipping label, its from their pricing tier.

The more a company ships daily, the better their pricing tier. The shipping company doesn't know or care whats in the box. If you have a friend that works at a car dealership, you can ship your bass through them for half of what the Ship It stores will charge you.

That’s fair! I rarely sell whole basses but this is good to know.
Guess I should not reply to posts super late night after drinking too much whiskey lol

Fed Ex has substantial limits on their insurance coverage. That's not the fault of Shipbikes, but everyone should be aware that insurance with FedEx is only available up to $2000 on most items.

What FedEx Shipping Insurance Doesn’t Cover

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with FedEx. In fact with bike flights for example you won't file the insurance claim with fedex, you'll file it with bike flights. From what another TB'er was saying shipbikes is okay with bass guitars going through their service. I'd double check that personally. In fact right now I'm using another service that is the middleman between shipper and ups. Just yesterday while having a conversation with them about transit times internationally they mentioned to me that their insurance carrier is not the same as UPS's even though it ships through UPS. You learn something new everyday.

My intuition is that shipbikes is only the middle man and is not getting involved with any claims or insurance. I would assume that any damaged or missing package would be between you and FedEx. Just my two cents and gut feeling since you are the one shipping it not shipbikes. They are only providing a discounted shipping label.

It's double and triple checked, ShipBikes will ship anything even though they use the word bikes.

I stopped assuming when I was 19 yrs old. If that's the case then they would be the minority with these 3rd party servicers to UPS/FEDEX. The rest of them are contracting their own insurance(keyword:servicer). I'm going to look into what their discount is and of course quadruple check the insurance thing. Some wanker here on TB said something about it's been double and triple checked.. good for you. Knowing what I know after bikeflights told me insurance will cycling related only, I'm not shipping anyone's instrument until verifying for myself on whether their purchase is covered by ins.

Hopefully this clears up the insurance claim issue.

Lesfunk...thanks for clearing that up. I was just looking out for fellow TB'ers. When I saw this post header I decided to jump in after having a conversation with the higher

I spoke with Chris at shipbikes. You all are very correct. Still, I'm glad I decided to speak up because DO NOT expect the same through bikeflights, they told me point blank about 1 1/2 yrs ago that they had a policy change and...no bueno. I'm happy to know I have another option now. Thanks guys!!

The company reached out to the site's Help Desk and asked that we announce that they do not, in fact ship bass guitars, and that the information that they did was a mistake. So closing this:

"We are in the business of shipping bicycles and bicycling equipment and not bass guitars. Our email to a customer was taken out of context and we are not in the business of shipping guitars. Please give me a call to discuss as we would like to stop any additional shipments of non cycling equipment via our service."

I have received several private messages about this matter. At no point did I intend to imply that anyone here had done anything wrong. Apparently someone lower down in the bikes organization made a decision that did not go well with someone higher up in that same organization. At this point I was informed only that the company question no longer wish to ship anything that was not bicycles.
