1x15 or 4x10?

I know the best thing would be to have them both on my set, but at the moment I can only buy on of these, both are rated 350w (the brand is called Oneal, it's a Brazilian brand). I most play punk, I'm using a Precision bass and my EQ would be lots of mid and a bit of overdriver, so... What you guys think would be better for my tone, a 1x15 or 4x10? I'm gonna buy it on the internet so I can't test them

410

No, it's not necessarily the best thing. You're buying into the false marketing that all 15" speakers provide good bottom end and all 10" speakers are provide tight mids. There are dozens of threads on TB that explain the POSSIBLE pitfalls with mixing cabinets. All speakers are not created equal.

Without knowing the frequency range, omage, and cab efficiency, it’s hard to make a recommendation. Personally, if those were all equal, I would buy the 410 in a heartbeat.

Definitely lean towards the 4x10 mid-range punch will definitely come shining through with that, not to say the 15 won't. But I see bigger speakers as being better for boom.

These are the specs, they claim both equally has the same spl, but the 4x10 has more treble and it has a horn in the middle providing more of that punch

I was surprised to see BassmanPaul say that a 4x10 and a 1x15 were typically a poor match. It was a staple pairing of Trace Elliot rigs for a long time and I can get pretty much any tone from mine. I also have the 4x5 bright box that finishes off the high frequency response. I'd say use a 4x10 for punk, or if you have a 1x15, find a crossover horn cabinet too.

Many famous bassists from Vic Wooten to Lemmy have used mixed speaker sizes, so I don't think that's really as much an issue as some like to claim. I would think that mixed brands and/or series of cabs, having dissimilar construction, would be more troublesome than mixed speaker sizes of the same brand and series.

Addressing the original question: you're playing punk. You want mids, harmonics and VOLUME. So between your choices, go with the 410 for sure.

Heck with it, let's take a bounce on Equipboard and see what other punk and punkish bassists use, 10 or 15? Just grabbing names off the top of my head...

Dee Dee Ramone, 10.
Mike Dirnt, 10.
Paul Simonon, 10.
Mark Hoppus, 10.
Klaus Flouride...doesn't say.

Well, there's four points of reference anyway...
