600 Pages of Walter Becker's Gear for Sale

They just are passing the auctioneer's fee on to the buyer.

I get that; it just seems excessive considering the audience for the auction--musicians who know what they're bidding on.

Then again, it makes sense because they know who the target audience is.

What a crappy a$$ thing auctions are sometimes.

Something you don't see many of in the catalog are bass amps (and i was surprised to not see a B12 or B15). There are more bass heads than speaker cabinets, but considering the number of bass guitars listed, and the number of guitar amps, I would have expected more. Since he often played bass on their recordings, I wonder if he went direct, used the studio's amp, or maybe some of his gear was held back from the auction.

Not sure why everyone thinks fees are a big deal. It's disclosed. It's a cost of doing business, or buying. No one is forcing anyone to bid. Same folks would scoff hard at being asked to play for free or peanuts, why the hate on these? It's just part of the cost. If the fees make the cost excessive, you've reached your bid limit, simple.

I’m cool with a few bucks going to the house for winning the auction.

I know the house has to make its take, but a total of 28% before shipping and insurance just seems a bit much.

I get ya. I really wanted that Hahn '51 P-bass (Made in New York State). I'm sure Walter never played it, but he owned it. But there are also no warranties on any of the equipment. What if you buy it, pay the 28% fees, tax and shipping and there's a major problem with it? I don't think there is any recourse.
This kind of sale is not targeting the working musician.

If you haven't checked out the catalog of stuff for sale from Steely Dan's Walter Becker's estate, you are missing a real treat. Its online and nearly 600 pages (yes ... 600) of basses, bass amps (including an early 1970s SVT head), guitars, guitar amps, effects, studio equipment, etc. that are for sale. You can buy the catalog for $100 or download it for free. There is so much of it, its like walking into a high-end music store. Happy Bidding! ttps://juliensauctions.com/about-auction?id=296

That was SO much fun. Thanks for sharing.
