A Journey to the Dark Side

I've run into civilians who occasionally show a lack of respect towards bassists, although in my experience they're pretty rare. I've never personally been treated badly by other musicians purely because I play bass. Quite the opposite in fact.

FWIW my long time SO is a rock guitarist. So as far as guitarists go, I can definitely say there's at least one redheaded guitarist who seems to like a certain bass player just fine despite a reputation for not suffering fools gladly. ;)

I come from 25+ years living as a guitar player, to learn late in life that i’ve always been a bassist.

Playing bass has enabled me to learn exponential respect for the instrument and the people who play it; it would be the same the other way around... I find the guitar to be an extremelly unforgiving and ungreatful instrument, way less accomodating and warm as the bass is (to me), so my hat to whomever gets to master the instrument.

All to say that insulting a fellow musician is a sign of ignorance; same applies to whomever insults a fellow human.

Peace,

On Talkbass I read what bass players think about gear, sound, guitarists, etc., but was curious to see what guitarists think of us. Do they hate P-basses with flats and tort? Do we do things that annoy them? Do "gui****s" call us "basstards" when were not around? I went to a guitar chat room to find out and was pleasantly surprised to find the following thread:

We're not important at all. They have shirts and magnets that say, "Your bassist is useless." Etc.

Guitarists think bassists are stupid, failed guitarists. I am not joking. Anything that sounds off is the bass. They think bassists are too lazy to learn their parts and too lazy to change their strings. If they could get away without needing a bassist, they would. If you are at all audible, you're too loud. If you're not standing in the back of the stage, you're in the way of them entertaining the crowd.
I recently started playing for an 80's tribute hair band. We were starting into 18 and life Skid Row. I tore into the nice chorus laden riff "Bass Riff" on the intro. gui**** stops and looked at me confused "as they always do" and said "what did you just play there"? I replied "the bass riff that is in the opening bars". gui**** still looked confused "as they always do LOL". He said "I don't remember that". I said that's because your a gui**** and only listen to yourself. He got a little ruffled at this point. I asked the BL to play the intro to the song as he has all of them on mp3 player. Voila!! There it was!! He still looked confused "understandable cause he is a gui****". I proceeded to explain to them that after watching some old footage of the band with the "former" bass player and noticed that he didn't play that part and skipped over many others. "Silence"
Why will they let us write "basstard" and not "gui****''??

Bait and switch.

This is the truth (I mean as in it's the truth about how many see us)

I'm a guitarist first and spent years on TDPRI. I don't recall much discussion of "bassists" as such at all. The focus was mostly on the instrument and all the accessories (amps, pedals and such) and everyone there appreciated a nice P or J as much as anyone here would. I don't recall any snarky or dismissive comments toward a whole class of players.

I am sure there are many different scenarios, but my experience has been the opposite, sometimes the bass player has a good point of view and sometimes the guitarist or even the drummer has an idea how things should play out. Sometimes you have a great idea that gets incorporated into the tune, sometimes you get completely shot down. That was always the fun part for me, to see how it ended up and in the end the whole band was in agreement, sometime you had to compromise, sometimes you had to be totally over-ruled. Jeez, I really miss it. I was lucky enough to play with some awesome musicians, all the while doing the 'Waynes World' I'm not worthy thing. Rock on!

I've worked with guitarists who were good musicians and good band mates. I've also worked with guitarist who thought they were much better than they actually were and not such good band mates. I've dealt with a select few that were amazing players yet remained cool and some who let it go to their heads. It's all case by case in my book.

I have a buddy who is an anesthesiologist. He feels like he’s the bass player of the surgical team at times. Totally not the guy who saves the day unless you count pushing the right meds, at the right time, having several contingencies covered in case something happens that may not have been expected. Not to mention making sure the patient wakes up at the end of be case. But the doc who does the cutting is the face of the success. Sound familiar?

I thought this was a thread about tuna noodle casserole.

"Yes! Yeeeesssss! Eat enough tuna casserole and your journey toward the Dark Side will be complete!"

I have only personally met 1 person with this mentality and one on YouTube the RNA Music guy. But other than that
man everyone I meet sure welcomes a bassist, a solid one at that. Much love for the lower end I have encountered.
