Any relatively modern Bootsy bass with natural tone (no effects)?

Really nice playing by Bootsy, very Bootsyish bubbling on the riddim. Been a Bootsy fan for several decades but never heard this one, Stones not being very high on my list.

At first I thought what a waste of such a funky bassline, but if it arouses someone's interest in the happenings of the funkier side of the tracks, so not bad.

But that drummer/producer, Steve Jordan. Stiff, unfunky drumming, too front in the mix. That snare sound aches mi ears.

Envelope filter on this

Ya think? :)

That was actually the first tune that came to mind when I saw this thread, because I couldn't remember what sound he used, just that I'd loved his playing on that track when I heard it a bazillion years ago.

I read an interview with Keith Richards shortly after Talk Is Cheap was released, and he talked a lot about the making of that track. Keith & Steve Jordan recorded the basics for that tune as just a drums and guitar duo. Since there were no other instruments playing, they encouraged the engineer to get a "big" sound...but then they grew so fond of that huge, in-your-face drum sound that they were faced with the problem of How Do You Fit Any Other Instruments Around It? They started brainstorming about who could play bass in a way that would be effective but not clash with the timbre they'd already established, and to hear Keith tell it, they both simultaneously realized Bootsy was the only guy who could do it.

That being said, I don't necessarily disagree with you. Jordan's never been one of my favorite drummers...not even close.
