Which modulation pedal would you choose?

I personally need a chorus and flanger. I prefer a good multi for this. I used an SA orbital for while, then to the mobius. Then to the boss MD500 and now on to the HX effects. I’m pretty happy with the HX because it gives me almost all the mod I could ever want or need. And I can stack them if I wanted kr whatever. It’s great. I’ve never used much phaser so really flanger is my #1 then chorus.

These are effects I don’t often use but need for certain parts. And they gotta be lush. Got to be. I’ve had the boss CEB3 and MXR BCD among many others and those were probably my least fav. Way way too low key and mellow for me. I couldn’t get one sound out of either of those I would use. They sounded good, just nowhere near what I want in a chorus/mod pedal. Heck, the ehx small clone sounds wonderful. Now that, I’d use. Not super strong, but very lush.

So it looks like I may be able to get a Boss CEB-3 in a pedal trade. Probably a good starting point if nothing else.

Have to admit that the EHX Bass Clone seems like a good "bang vs buck" option to possibly try, as I liked the small clone back in my guitar slinging days.

i'm using the julia too. Probably using it TOO much. Setting the rate to like 9 oclock, the depth to like 2 oclock, lag to 12 oclock, and the blend at about 10 oclock with the waveform at triangle. Just gives the tone a great warmth and slight movement. It doesn't sound overpowering thanks to the blend knob.

obviously the thing can go wild if you set it up right to get some crazy modulation but right now i'm using it as like an always on pedal for certain types of music

I had thought about the SA stuff multiple times, but there's just something about them that doesn't sound that great to me. I like the idea of the versatility they bring, just haven't heard a demo with a decent tone, at least to my ears. Much like you, I want whatever mod I used to be lush. I'm ok with subtle for certain things, but it's got to be able to get nice and watery when called for. I'm an 80s kid, so take that for what it's worth. Since I'll likely be getting that Boss CEB in an even trade, I'll be experimenting with it for a while, but will likely add on or upgrade shortly after. The Bass Clone is looking like the next step. After that, we'll see.

If I were starting over with chorus/modulation or if I just wanted one simple chorus for use on my board for modulation, I would most def go with the newer EHX bass small clone. Without a doubt.

Wonder of wonders.... The friend that was gonna trade me for that CEB-3 also has the Boss PH-3 Phaser and is gonna let me try it out too. Likely he'll be willing to sell it super cheap if not include with the trade. I may have lucked out!! Genuinely good dude.

That said, we all know that this never ends..... There's always something else to try/want. Wouldn't have it any other way. ;) I'll definitely be researching some of these suggestions more for possible future acquisition.

Seeing as 55% of survey responses went for "other" and 22% went for "why get just one", it strikes me that modulation seems to be every bit as personal as the choice in compressors.

I would agree with this.

I hear you on this one too. I thought the SA Lunar and Nemesis I owned were both versatile, sounded good, were well built, offered lots of tonal options, and came with excellent customer support. Having said all of that, there's a feel and desire to use a certain pedal that has to be there in order for me to keep it. This isn't necessarily speaking to digital vs analog, either. Despite all of the options of the Lunar, I just wasn't "bonding" with it and went without modulation on my board when I owned it (it was programmed for phase, chorus, and some vibrato type effects). I recently picked up the less versatile, but very lush sounding EQD Grand Orbiter and I find myself going to it much more often. It's inspiring me to play and toy with some different ideas, and that's a big part of what I want from pedals.

I use mine with very similar settings.
