Bass Gift Recommendation

Pedals! Everyone likes pedals. They’re like toys. They don’t have to be practical. A hand wired Blackhawk fuzz pedal?

Whatever you end up getting him, I hope you (or someone else?) leaks a link to this thread to him, afterwards.

Having a partner that cares so deeply, and heads out to do actual research and ask advice about how to support their husband's hobby - that's invaluable. To me, it would mean a lot - I hope to him, it would too. In fact, even reading this thread today has made me smile - thanks for that!

In terms of a gift, I'm a relative noob so perhaps don't have much to add... A new set of strings, or a few sets, that he's not tried before, may be nice.

I hope the two of you have great birthday, and a long and happy future together.

You said "just a wife"... I hope you understand that "just" isn't the right word to use. Those of that have spouses know that we musicians can put you through quite a bit. I'd be half the man I am today if it wasn't for my very significant other. Judging from the fact that you thought to come into this forum to get answers, I'd say odds are good that your husband is as fortunate as I am.

I love threads like this. :)

For all we know, he's already a member here. Perhaps he's even replied. I have a birthday coming up, but I don't have any of the gear listed so I'm pretty sure it's not me. ;)

+1 to the gift card idea. You are very wise to avoid buying a bass, especially if he's very particular about instruments. If you do buy a tuner, pedal or strap, try to make sure it's returnable in case it's not a good fit. I'm sure he'll love the effort you put into getting him a special gift.

I do have a specific suggestions for straps, if you want to get something unique and higher-end.

Anthology Gear Wear

Edit: Just noticed that @JohnnyBottom made the same suggestion.

Hats Off to you, m'am. He's lucky to have you.

ONE thing that was always just too cool: Basses always have a case of some sort, as I'm sure the Lakland does. Often though, a bag is easier to handle. There's any number of nice ones in synthetic fabrics, and they're just fine, but something I've always lusted after but would never buy for myself (the extravagance !) is one of these:

Guitar Bag - LM18-BRN (levysleathers.com)

Available in either black of brown, full leather, made in Canada, and very high quality; a LOT of us here use their straps, and they're BUILT. And I'd think the Lakland would fit (I'm sure you could EMail Levy's to double check), and when you walk in toting one of those, the whole place KNOWS you're The Man.

All the Best,

JW

Maybe a bass kit for building his own bass if he has never done this before? Price wise there is everything from Ebay to Warmoth.

Are you in the US? Here in Europe, a kit from Thomann would be my first choice for cheap-just-to-try-out.

You could even paint it together and hang it on the wall if you as couple are into that kind of thing.

I'm gonna second, third and fourth the gift card idea. Or let him name the toy he's been jonesing for and bless that purchase at a nice dinner.

He probably has something ultra-specific in mind, I wouldn't try to guess :D. Good luck!

I made a deal with my family. I will maintain a detailed wish list, to which they have access, and I agree not to buy anything for myself within a few months if my birthday and Christmas. This enables them to rest assured that I will love whatever they get me, and because there are always several things on the list, I will always be surprised. So far, so good.

Good luck in your quest! :)

Help!! Just a wife trying to figure out what to get her bass playing husband.
My husband is an avid bass player who is into researching, purchasing, reviewing, everything bass related from guitars, amps, strings, pedals, sound systems, etc.

His birthday is approaching and I am at a loss as to what to get him. He talks about wanting bass related items, but then just purchases them. This makes it hard for me to figure out what to get him that will be something he will really enjoy and use.

I would love some recommendations as to what to get him that he will be thrilled about. I really want to surprise him and need your help!

Some of the current items he is has
- Lakland (skyline series) bass
- Genzler Magellan 800
- Genz-Benz Streamliner 900
- Genz-Benz NX2 Series

*He also like Devon basses*
(Purchasing a bass guitar is not an option, he has too many particular wants/needs when it comes to that, so I am needing other ideas/options).
Thank you for your help, it’s greatly appreciated!

I say sit on his lap, & get him a gift card from his favorite store, or strings try snooping around or sneaky ask him his favorite. but make sure you sit on his lap!
