Bassballs alternatives

Well (putting on my flame suit)...there's the Behringer VB1 Vintage Bass Dynamic Filter:

At least it's in a metal case!:)

Just puttin' it out there...decide for yourself if you want to try it.

If you DIY or know someone who can, a very durable high quality replica can be built.

Another fellow TBer's take on the EHX filter circuit, with mods — awesome job Freekmagnet!

Of course, it'd be cheaper to just get the Mooer Sweeper. Maybe even cheap to get an EHX Bassballs and have it modded for reliability, depending on what went wrong with your originals.

Maybe...
Rehouse into a Hammond
Swap in better jacks
Replace caps in audio path with higher quality ones
make the trimpots external
High quality power jack
higher quality potentiometers...
?

Well I got the Moore today and played with it for about a half an hour. Right away I knew that I didn't like it. It's much smaller than I liked, it feels cheap and it also doesn't sound nearly as good as the BB, I played them side by side. Also every time it's engaged I would get a radio signal. I tried all of the cables and it was coming from the pedal. This even happened when the fuzz was switched off. So back it goes!!!

I'm going to look at some of the smaller builders.

Does anyone in this thread know if the Mooer inverts phase like the Bassballs does?

IE, I can't mix clean with Bassballs through an LS2 because the BB is reverse phase. I need to do it with a Xotic X-Blend with it's phase invert switch engaged.

It did not help but part of the sound of the BB is the filters sweeping against each other and I suspect that phase inversion may be an artifact of that.
The only time I have been able to mix wet/dry is to run 2 amps or record on 2 channels and wide pan.

The radio signal is likely due to a diode issue, making your pedal act like a crystal radio. Definitely not acceptable. I too found the Bassballs hard to beat when I had it; I went through several filter pedals and always came back to it. If I ever put a filter on my board again, it most likely will be a Bassballs.

I know this is a really old thread, but I'm able to run a BB in one loop of my LS-2, and keep the second loop dry for come clean blend on it. I've never had any issues. Also, I tend to like the Mooer a little better. More sounds on the fly, and it has been super reliable. I can also run one with my Bassbone and blend in the dry signal without any issues.
