Ive always thought that the late,great, Kathy McDonald had the best rock voice ever.

New Orleans Little Queenie, aka Leigh Harris. She could do it all from New Orleans R&B (My Darlin' New Orleans) to Rock to Jazz. She covered Bowie's "Stay", The Stones "Down Home Girl", and "Slingshots and Boomerangs. Then sang scat at 318 BPM (Cloudburst), the closing song on the Movie Eight Men out (After You've Gone), THEN the them of Mardi Gras (If Ever I Cease to Love), and she wrote some amazing songs, like Gumbo Heaven. MANY great voices in this thread! I have to add Patti Smith to the mix — one of the most distinctive, authentic, and powerful vocal performers I've ever heard.

Mercedes Scalzitti from my band Door 13 is one heck of a female rock vocalist. She's not famous like these other women in this thread, but she should be...
For me, there are singers, and then there are vocalists. Singers can sing anything, and vocalists are good at their gig, but I probably don't want to hear their Christmas or Great American Songbook set.
My favorite singers are Ann Wilson, Pet Benatar, Annie Lennox, and of course Linda Ronstadt: Linda was the archetype for so many 'girl singers' just as so many guitar players came from Clapton or Beck or Page.
My fave girl vocalists would be Chrissy Hynde, Bonnie Raitt, and Bonnie and Becka Bramlett.

And +1 to Pat Benatar. IMO, no one can hold a candle to her. We saw her and Neil Giraldo not long ago and she can still kill it.
Alissa White-Gluz has one of the sweetest voices I've ever heard.
In my honest opinion it was the late Gayle McCormick of Smith. She killed it!
Belinda Carlisle can always start me up too.

In my opinion, Johnette Napolitano has the best voice in rock AND, she is a bassist.
You can add who you think is thee best, but I am not budging. Siouxsie might be my #2 and Hayley Williams(Paramore) has some lungs too!
She had a cold here and she still nailed it.
She lives out somewhere near me(but there’s alot of wide open area and places to hide). I might have even seen her at the grocery store, not sure if it was her. Jim Mankey was out here as well, don’t know if he is still, but they(and a pickup drummer)played a rare gig at a smaller restaurant/club down the road back in 2011.
