I find the bass sound on this entire record to be literally unbelievable
100% agree. I would love to know what bass & strings were used on this recording - it does NOT sound anything like RC's Juzek(-y?) bass & strings of a few years later.
FYI/truth be told... - there are (much) later RC recordings with a bass sound that I would also call "unbelievable". (sad face...)

I caught Ron at the Blue Note last Saturday and his live sound was unbelievable like this. He was Playing through an Epifani cab but I couldn't make out the amp on top.
There is a pretty nasty solo LP called All Alone that could be in the running for worst recorded bass sound. DI with those horrible nylon strings...
Brian Bromberg's post about his upcoming new bass reminded me about how jaw-droppingly excellent his recorded sound was on "Wood":
I thought he was using Golden Spirals back at this time. Ron on guts (before the black strings) is such a sound! I love his playing no matter what, and there are many records of his with those black nylon strings that sound gorgeous too.
Was listening this morning to Michael Formanek/Ensemble Kolossus - The Distance, wow that bass sound amazing on that recording especially the moment where he play alone. You can really hear the surrounding.
I'm not going to play the "best" game, but I am going to recommend you listen to:

I heard him first on an album, Leon Parker "Above and Below". I really like the stringy twangy sound he gets in a number of places on that album. I think it really fits well with the character of the particular tunes.

It's funny as there's several top threads on him right now, but I think Dave Holland has one of the best and consistent recorded sounds in jazz on double bass. Seems most albums he's on as a leader or a sideman are also mixed very well to hear him.
Charlie Haden's sound on that one side of John McLaughlin's My Goal Is Beyond is one of the first things that made me aware of how huge a double bass could sound.
Gary Peacock's sound with Albert Ayler on Spiritual Unity was pretty incredible to my ears.
Bassist Stanley Clarke was 21 when he performed on this record.
