Big cabs with towel bars in CovidTime

I have this Genz Benz Uber 410 I LOVE tonally, but I haven’t used it in a band context since February. It’s a ripper...full, meaty, clear, but not sterile. And it’s in fantastic shape. It doesn’t have casters, but it does have a couple of handy integrated rollers for tilting and maneuvering. They are not designed for a lot of rolling...more for around a stage. Given that it’s a 410 and I’m 6’2”, I have to hunker down a bit to do so. To straight pick it up, it’s 70 lbs.

I’ve got a 40 lb 210 I use at church, and a nice 100 watt combo, so for smaller stuff, I think I’m covered. I’ve kept my wife’s old minivan as a personal knock-around vehicle and with bass gear in mind.

All this considered, and with Covid making big cabs even more economical, is anything comparable to my Genz? If, hopefully in the future, I use a big boy for a loud/outdoor gig, it must have a towel bar or comparable tilt-n-roll apparatus. Weight is not a primary concern if I can just back it up to the van and slide it in.

I haven’t seen a Berg 610/412 in my area, even with Nashville just 2 hours away. Ampeg fridges are everywhere, some with more realistic prices than others. My HandBox would be a likely pairing. 400 watts @ 4 ohms, very tubey.

The voice in the back of my head: if I’ve got something that sounds fantastic, why risk a swap even if what I have is more cumbersome?

810, 610, 412, and 215’s are all on the table for a potential swap, i.e. something tall enough to tilt and roll easily, plus (presumably) added dB’s.

But yeah dude, I know your struggles. I'm also 6 2. I have a problem with most carts and cabs myself. 610s are pretty perfect to move around. My fridge would be much easier if it was about 30 lbs less. But, it's really just not too bad. I've always wished that instead of solid towel bars, they'd put extending dolly bars. Pull out and click in. Or something.

But yeah, 610's where its at.

I picked up an Uber 210 a few months back from GC - used 210, 410 and 115 versions all showed up at the same time. I've been pairing the 210 with a Genzler BA12-3 but after playing the 210 on it's own and really liking it I decided to pull the trigger on the 410 which was still available. I'm thinking the 210+410 and the Genzler MG800 will give me everything I need up to the point of FOH support being required. They're both on the heavy side for their speaker configs but I'll have good options for using one or the other/both.

That ought to do it. I’ve contemplated that same setup with the Genzler. With both my HandBox and Shuttle 9.0, the Uber kicks like a mule, just in different flavors. It’s an honest, transparent cab, yet still thick. And they are not easy to come by.

Genz is A+ stuff. Now knowing Uber 810’s exist resolves my thread.

I have the same Handbox R-400 head, OP. Great little amp and should do well (well, you would know better than I!) with an efficient cab like your Uber 410.

Is your Uber 410 4 Ohms? And does your amp have the 2-Ohm mod? If so, then, as someone else suggested above, you could stack it with an 8 Ohm 210 for a modular, 2.7 Ohm 610. Re. transport, maybe a good folding cart and a stout strap to hold the cabs together?

You could look into the possibility of installing some sort of telescoping handle and larger caster assembly on your 410 (whether you run it with a 210 or not), but you'd want to make sure the work was done right, without compromising the integrity of the cab or introducing any rattles at high volume. (Folding cart might be easier.)

Re. the amp, if yours does not have the 2 Ohm mod (mine came thus from the builder), you might contact him to see what's involved and whether it could be done easily state-side (to avoid shipping back and forth overseas).

Just a thought -- good luck on your quest for the 810 version of your cab.

If you really like you cab but want to try something new, I'd hold onto it, if you're able, until you're able to play the pieces side-by-side (ideally with a band, though that might understandably be difficult right now).

Excellent advice. I am reluctant to ditch gear I know sounds the way I like it.

My HandBox is just 4 ohms, as is my Shuttle 9.0. I recently had the HandBox serviced for a slight humming issue over the summer (by Kevin Shaw), and now it is running silent and sounding juicy. It is beautiful. I didn’t think at the time about getting him to do a 2-ohm mod, but there is no one else I know of nearby without shipping who I would rather tackle it. Maybe later on.

I’ve considered installing a tilt-n-roll apparatus with a sliding handle like on luggage to the 410, but I was reluctant to start drilling on such a nice cab. In all honesty, I very likely will never need an Uber 810, but I’m still entertaining the remote possibility of snagging one in the future if I still have the cargo space if for no other reason than the chance to hear the awesome.
