Blu DeTiger seeing her bass at GC

[MODERATOR VOICE]
I just went through this thread to clean it up and get it back on track. During my review of the thread I came across a post that use the term 'smoke show' in reference to Blu DeTiger. I deleted that comment too. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TOLERATE COMMENTS RELATED TO A PLAYER'S APPEARANCE, ESPECIALLY SEXIST ONES. Please review the FAQ for this sub-forum.

Lol -- I hope I never become one of those people who can't accept younger artists can be as good and/or successful as their childhood heroes (just like guitarists who can't accept how great of a guitarist John Mayer is).

Anyway, she's definitely one of the funkiest, if not the funkiest, bass players I've heard since... the 90s? Here's an instrumental version of "Vintage" posted earlier:

Instead of "childhood heroes", "childhood dreams" might be nearer the mark. Hard to take seeing young and successful when you're middle-aged and it didn't happen for you. Including myself in that of course :)

I've heard the name before but never the actual music prior to this thread.

Pleasant voice. Well-played bass. Nothing to dislike in that respect.

The other side of the coin is that her music does absolutely nothing for me. It simply doesn't stick. Nothing memorable there, IMO. Granted, I'm not her target market by any stretch of imagination.

She'll do fine.

My $0.02 only...

Now Blu is checking out her bass in a store in Paris. This is a fun way to promote your bass.

If it was me and my own signature bass, i'd go into shops, ask to play my bass, and then $@*#-talk the bass and the guy who's name is on the bass, and the manufacturer for being so stupid as to make a signature bass for the jerk whose name is on the bass. Then i'd see if i could get the employee who's helping me make fun of the bass and myself without them knowing I'M THE JERK with the signature bass. 😆

There's probably a reason i don't have a signature bass and Blu does... i mean list of reasons. I mean LONG list of reasons. Like, really long. :roflmao:

At this point, there is no perfect candidate for a sig bass from any company. There's no player with universal appeal for all audiences - those days are long gone. All the so-called "greats" of yesteryear already have one. Blu seems like just as worthy of a candidate as any other modern day player.

I'm an old dude who teethed on Joe Osborn, Carole Kaye, Jamerson, Duck and ... you get it. Music ain't quite that way no more and I've learned to accept that.

Blu has a sound that I don't dislike and can grow to enjoy. Her playing is solid and crosses styles. I'm all for her, Nik West and others.

I'm old but I'm flexible and willing to listen.

I've been playing her on Spotify and her music has solid bass lines with real instruments and even some good guitar work. She apparently took to bass at 7 and has made it her i strume t rather than coming from guitar.

I'm still a 60s-90s pop guy, but I like her Prince moments.

Good on her.

Her drummer (her brother) is really solid.

She's a good player and I like her music.

I think a lot of what you read on Internet forums (which is a dinosaur internet medium, sort of a paleo-social media, not inhabited by young people) so often about any young artist is that the denizens of the forum don't like or respect the person because they can't name any of their music. Well sure, that happens as we age, we become out of touch with current music. That doesn't mean it's no good or it's just noise. That's what your parents said about your music.

Some other people talk about 'marketing', but she's basically doing what you do today. This isn't the old days where you play high school gyms and dive bars to 10 people and put up flyers until you somehow make it. She's made it in music building a social media following to spread the music.

No matter what, she's doing original music and selling it for money which is something none of us can say. She's selling out tours, while most of us have never even sold tickets.

She also DJs, and I know this probably is not the crowd to appreciate live DJ sets, but she's good at that too. Sometimes she's playing bass while doing it.

The modeling and social media influence stuff is in addition to all of the above.

This is someone who's killing it, and is still a great bassist. From what I have seen in a few clips she seems like a decent guitarist too.

We should celebrate anybody making good.

I was completely unfamiliar with her until a half-hour ago.

She seems like a talented young person who's doing the work to make it as a pop star. She's a very solid bassist. She may not be recording material that's everybody's cup of tea, but nobody is everybody's cup of tea. I'm not likely to buy her music but I'm not her target market, either.

Fender decides who gets a signature model based upon marketing possibilities, not chops. Can she play like Tal Wilkenfeld? No, but maybe she will in ten years. Maybe she won't. What difference does it make? She's certainly a good player, virtuoso or not. In the meantime she's exposing young women to the possibility of being bassists with this sig model and I'm fine with that. Also, as others mentioned, the feature set is nice.

As for the people who feel the need to pis* in everyone else's cornflakes... well... you do you. I'm not sure how you see this sort of 'contribution' as productive but it's a discussion forum and, as such, you have a right to discuss. The music industry will not always back the people you root for. Manufacturers will not always have great quality control. Singers will not always sing songs in a style you like. We all share this forum and you can complain about those things here if you want to. Just don't expect everyone to agree with you if you choose to do it in a thread like this.

Blu DeTiger has my full respect. I hope she gets 1,000 kids to try out playing bass.

+1

Playing bass for Olivia Rodrigo (look Ms. Rodrigo up if you don’t know) makes Fender’s decision to release a Blu DeTiger signature bass an easy one, just for the Marketing.

Just heard of Blu DeTiger a few minutes ago - might of heard her bass playing on Olivia Rodrigo’s music - listened to 2 of Blu’s songs & will listen to more.
