Some work added during “Triller”? Did Nathan have his BB5000 by then?

Honestly, the whole track sounds like Nathan East on some sort of PJ bass to me. It almost sounds like bass was recorded in 1985 and the rest of the track was late 70s early 80s. I don't recall LJ having that bright and scooped of a tone. That's classic 80s slap bass tone all the way. Any chance the track was doctored up at a later time? Some sort of remix?

oh man, he had that tone sometimes.... don't forget how much studio wizardrywoo crap goes into every bass mix from those days.

Ever listen to some of John Paul Jones' unmixed solo bass tracks? He had some serious zing at times too... but you'll never heard it in the led zep albums.

check out the LJ solo live video on the first page of this thread actually... right there I hear a fair bit of zing, considering the recording itself is shy on treble, I bet it was way more than that into the board from his bass.

Damn, that video of LJ's slap bass lesson? Unusual for a great player to actually be able to teach, also.... normally step-by-step, start easy, work into complex, teaching isn't something a lot of great players seem to really be able to, or want to bother with, explaining.

What a nice guy too eh? Complimentary, thoughtful, agreeable, doesn't get annoyed.

And on the MJ stuff... KILLER

Most likely since it was added to the 35th anniversary edition of Off The Wall. That whole album was remastered.

I own "Off The Wall" Special Edition and there are not extra tracks.

According to discogs.com, the track was released as a bootleg many times until Sony/Epic released "The Ultimate Collection" box set in 2004.

All the MJ's posthumous albums were made from previously recorded pieces, re-done demos with new music etc.
Since the song was released in 2004, the label could already practice swapping tracks for new ones.
As someone mentioned earlier. The bass sounds too bright for 1979.

For me it's mid 80's. It is possible that there was such a scenario that they replaced the original bass with a new one in the 80's. Let's say they thought they would use a song for the movie. Maybe we'll find out someday.

My feelings exactly.
Tonally, it reminds me of Louis during his Yamaha custom/BB1300 period, but the “dry” technique and 1.42 low B is throwing me.
