Double Bass Brad Sarno’s V8 Octal preamp

I got my Sarno Black Box and V8 Octal preamp last week.
Tested the following:
1. Marcustico into Hi-Z input of UAD Apollo
2. Marcustico into Red Eye into BB into Sarno V8 (flat) into XLR input of Apollo
3. Marcustico into Red Eye into BB into Sarno V8 (rolled back bass, pushed treble) into XLR input of Apollo
4. Marcustico into Red Eye into BB into Sarno V8 (same as 3. but rolled back and pushed less) into XLR input of Apollo
5. Marcustico into Red Eye (rolled treble completely off) into BB into Sarno V8 (same eq as 4.) into XLR input of Apollo

* in all samples I have a Lexicon 224 plugin applied in the UAD Apollo

I can be more precise in future tests but hey better than nothing at all :)

I have been trying lately to use separately the Sarno BB and the V8 (mine has a vari Z) as I wanted to use them for two different pickups (Ehrlund eap and Gage naturalist).
The thing is the V8 is very quiet and requires me to push the gain quite a bit (as compared to when I put the BB in front).
The interesting thing I noticed is that with the gage naturalist with vari Z set to minimum I don’t get any sound out (maybe no wonder as that pickup is very bassy)

There is a knob on the back of the V8 next to the amp out. It is an amp gain knob that you set so that you dont have to overdrive the front gain (and the tubes). Maybe you have that turned down. Also the variZ is telling you that the minimum imp for that pickup is Higher then the minimum on the dial (as to be expected) turn it up to 9 oclock and then 11 o clock and the imp will sound the pickup

Hey man I'll port over here. I have used it by itself into a MAS 18 and...I dont know got to the gig and just could not find the sound...it was bad. Don't know if it was an interaction with the PA or the ground or what. But that said I have not done a gig without it since I got it (...like you I go thru things and get rid of what I don't use). With a Redeye either before or after it is sounds great. But it might be just right for you just the way it is. let me know if you use it.

My new bass has a FC on it. I am going to have the Yama put on there when I take it to the Luthiers. I like the FC with the V8. Was thinking of having the Yama just put on the G side until I decide which I like better on the bass. The Bassbalsereit can go loud if you need it?

Oh yeah, as loud as the Yama. I still have the Yama on, but even with the V8 it still sounds a little sterile to me and very bass heavy, which I don't need on my already bassy bass. The Bassbalsereit is not as bass heavy and sounds more organic to me.

Reactions: flatback
The Bassbalsereit requires that you drill a hole into the bridge/ foot correct? That’s not something that I’m willing to do. Just my take of course.
I’m kinda out on the Full Circle and Yamahiko as well. Their adjusters are metal and I’m really partial to the sound of ebony/rosewood ones
as compared to aluminum ones, which I had in previous bridges. I have a Realist Life Line as an “break glass and install fast in case of emergency backup” The RedEye Twin has made the Ehrlund EAP my number one choice on both my Mirecourt 5/8ths and the Kolstine Busetto Travel Bass. It doesn’t interrupt the sound like other pickups do. I realize they are expensive but when you subtract the Ehrlund Preamp from the cost of the system
it’s more reasonable, provided the EAP plays well with your bass, and you own a RedEye Single or Twin.
