Build Thread: A 60s inspired 70s style MJT jazz bass

stunning work and finish...and design

What was the finished weight?

and total cost if I can ask?

Answering both of your questions took me a bit of time as a lot of parts were purchased over the span of several months! But I am happy to share.

Due to the shipping of parts, costs at customs, and the shear quality of the components, the bass came to a total of approximately 2k USD. I would wager that the bass itself is worth about $1700 in parts and labour, working out to about $300 in shipping and customs charges.

The weight of the bass is pretty impressive, especially when considering the fact that the body is a single piece of mahogany and that the neck is stiffened by steel rods. To be fair, the bridge at tuners did an excellent job keeping this basses weight as low as possible. Its total weight (with strings) is 9 lbs 2 oz (about 4.14 kg).

That is a really good looking bass! I love that you had a vision in your head and went after it in every detail. Must be rewarding to play!

It took a lot of digging through TalkBass threads to figure out the little details that made this bass what it is. But I must say, it was a ton of fun! I highly recommend the process to anyone. It is really enjoyable to put together your own dream bass.

Nice build! Has your charcoal frost got greener since you first got it? like you i wanted aged charcoal frost where the clearcoat has yellowed but MJT sent me new looking charcoal frost. these are the references i sent them. the strat photo is from their own website!

i was aiming for basically the same thing you wanted but i think it looks more like what a new charcoal frost looks like. i'm hoping it will turn yellow and i've been leaving it in the window every day but it doesn't look too much different after a couple months.

how does yours look now?

Mixing some amber tint dye into some clear nitro and spraying that over the top will give you that yellowish/greenish aged thing. Kinda whack they weren't able to do that for you though.
