Cases!!! Argh!!! Allow me to vent...

I am not sure if this is the right part of the forum, but geez louise.

Buying cases is incredibly frustrating. Lack of tangible information only makes the task that much more difficult. Sadly, much of this is done with the case NOT being close at hand.. ie cannot take my bass and see if it fits. I have to go by my measurements and the measurements of the case. Simple enough, and I am ok with that! I get it.

The frustrating part..

The amount listings I see on the web, (Reverb, eBay, The Gear Page.. not TB - generally the info is available on the classified board here, as the seller KNOWS what will be required..) G & G cases are listed as for P and J basses.. SO NOT TRUE. The Jazz G & G are a little wider than the P cases.. In other words, the P bass swims in the jazz case and a jazz won't fit into a P case..

Kind of a big deal. :)

Yet - the listings continue to perplex me. I mean these folks want $40-50 to ship - and it's not for my lack of questioning - "Please, can I have dimensions.." Hell, I only want EXTERIOR dims. If it rings in to what I have, BOOM - we have a winner.

But man, banging my head against a wall here..

I SO wish there was one for sale here.. Lord knows I keep looking by the hour.

Save me.

Thanks - and moderator, my apologies if my hissy fit is in the wrong space. :p :D

So you've just entered the reality of the modern world? Yeah, G&G has been building cases for 60 years and still build them the old fashioned way: Um, you sort of eyeball what you want and whip it together without any measurements. Not just cases. Try buying tuners sometime. Apparently nobody really cares what size headstock hole they mount in because any real information like that never seems listed.

Of course gig bags can work out, but the best ones are sort of stiff and formed around the bass (like say my great Conklin gig bag) so guess what, yeah, to get a gig bag like that that really works you ha
ve to match it to the bass just like a case. Welcome to today.

Bought this Gator Pro Go three or four years ago.
One of the few basses Thunderbirds will fit in, but I use it for my G&L SB-2 and L-2000, P basses and Jazz basses.
The piece you see under the right-hand corner is an extra bumper piece...velcro on the bottom.

I've got cases crammed under beds, in closets, attic, garage. Have to be a dozen around the house that I never use since buying a Mono Dual M80 bag. Every week I've got a Jazz and a P in there and that's how it's been the last couple years. Sometimes I'll throw my 4001 in there, sometimes my Thumb, sometimes my EBMM 4 or 5HH. Everything fits, safe and secure.

Say "No" to the case race.

I can count all the times that I've carried a bass to the gig, in thirty years, in a case, on one hand.
The only bass that's in a case currently is a Jerzy Drozd. And that "case" isn't really hard shell.
They just take up space in my storage unit. I've had basses fall to concrete of the top of a 6ft stack of gear without so much as going out of tune. And that wasn't even a $100 bag.

proving that some people are just born lucky

I'm the opposite, so I need a good case!

A couple of weeks ago I waited all day for a UPS shipment, then left home for 20 minutes
wouldn't you know it, when I returned there was a notice they tried to deliver while I was gone

that's my life for you, stuff like that happens ALL the time

I'd save you with a gigbag. They're cheaper, lighter and offer better protection without having to wonder if the bass will fit.
Some people insist that cases are better, if you're one of them you won't be saved by me.

Same here, man. I just recently got a hard case as a trade, and it's my second one in 18 years of playing. The first one was retired by year 2.

Gig bags are more practical unless you are on the road and need more protective storage.

This. My hard cases have been in the storage area of my bonus room for 8 years. Mono Duo for the win!
