Compression and flatwounds?

My main bass is a fretless piezo StingRay with Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 flats, and I have both a tc SpectraComp and, as of this past Friday, a Boss BC-1X, both of which sound fantastic. I play mainly on the piezo pickup, but I also use the magnetic for some songs.

Both the SpectraComp and BC-1X are digital multiband compressors, and the SpectraComp is highly customisable, using a PC or iPad.

I like a light compression that just tames my overzealous transients if I dig in a bit too much, and both of these units are more than capable of providing a subtle, tone-enhancing and dynamics-enhancing spice to the mix. I don't want my signal squashed to death, because I do dig in fairly firmly, and I don't want to lose the impact of my playing, but with multiband compression you can compress the highs and mids separately from the lows, so it works as a dynamically responsive EQ.

If you are not well-versed in how individual parametres will affect your effect, maybe try the BC-1X, but if it doesn't work for you, remember that you can't modify the settings and so the BC-1X has a distinctive character that may or may not suit you and your instrument or your playing style.

There are many great compressors. It's really just finding one that works for you.
